emily and penelope were right, no matter how much isa would like to deny it, a week away from work did her good. she didn't take the week to rest though. she would spend thirty percent of her day studying to get her phd in psychology, twenty percent of her day at the gym and about fifty percent of her day consulting on cases with emily which meant she was never really not at work, she simply just worked from home but today she can finally go back to field work.
she heard from hotch that he was stepping down for the foreseeable future and to prepare herself for emily being the new unit chief. a part of isa would definitely miss hotch while he was gone but she liked the idea of emily as her unit chief. she and hotch were close but emily had been like an older sister to her.
regardless of what had happened, isa was ready to go home, all she needed was three painkillers and to pull on her trench coat, grab her car keys and go. she walked down the steps of her small one bedroom, walking through the living room as she grabbed her items and her go bag before she was out of the door. it took her about ten minutes to drive from her house to the fbi headquarters, she parked her pink vw bug outside the building. she was shaking with excitement, she tried to hide it but it was hard. she couldn't wait to see her friends again; a week was too long.
when she saw the elevator was about to shut, she ran into spencer. he saw her before she saw him, he called for her and held his hand out as he pulled her through the doors. the doors shut as soon as she stood beside him, hand slipping out of his.
"are you sure you should be back by now?" the two stood side by side, both of them staring straight ahead. that was how every conversation with them went, they never really made eye contact with one another. the two were both awkward and when they were at the same place. it was painful for the two to talk to one another in formal settings but when they were at home and they got drinks, they were more at ease with one another.
"i can't sit at home and let my brain rot." she pressed the button to the sixth floor and waited patiently for the doors to open. the two swayed in silence together, looking over at one another every few seconds.
"i sent you books with archie, did you not read them?" he played with the strap of his satchel as she patiently waited for the doors to open. "i did, i really like the book of sonnets." she gave him a tight-lipped smile and when the doors finally opened, she fled out of them, waiting for him to follow. when he did, she turned to him, walking backwards. "im gonna go get us some coffee," she pointed over her shoulder to the kitchen. he accepted her offer and warned her not to walk against a wall, she gives him a salute and makes it into the kitchen. she found a pot and poured two cups full of black, freshly brewed coffee. she pours sugar into both cups, stirs them and heads back to the conference room, trying not to spill the drinks.
"dont worry, there's enough sugar in here to kill a rhino," her voice was liquid smooth as she made her way through the doors, she had her eyes on the two cups, careful not to spill anything when he carefully takes both cups from her. he places them down and gives her a small smile when she thanks him. "i think the pot is fresh, i hope so." she picked up the cup and took a sip, hot poison. perfect.
"thank you," he flexes his thumb and moves out of the way before speaking again, "isa di angelo this is luke alvez by the way," he watched as isa raised her head, sweeping the bangs out of her eyes when she saw the man across from her. he was roughly around six foot tall and it was hard for the two to make direct eye contact.
her face flushed at the sight of him, she recognized him immediately and she hoped spencer couldn't see in it in her face but both of them were both trained profilers. he could read her as well as she could read him, they were two peas in the same pod. "oh," luke's voice hit her like a train, it rang through her head like it rang through his bedroom walls not even a year ago. she could still remember the sound of his heavy breathing, the way she felt it on her neck, tracing down her chest as he kissed every inch of her body. those intimate moments came back to her in flashes, and she tried to keep her composure.
"we know each other." he held a hand out and she stared at him like he had some kind of disease, she couldn't raise her hand. she had never been in a situation like that before, she didn't know how to act.
"i don't like touching people." she stared into his eyes, his perfectly warm, hot chocolate eyes locked in with hers. they flickered with something she had seen once or twice in one night, a fiery passion. "i guess a lot can change in a year." he bit into his lip like she once did, she felt her own teeth sink into the delicate flesh of her bottom lip. she felt her pulse raise as their eyes remained on one another. she couldn't pull her gaze from him, his face was slightly different from the last time, he had grown a rough beard and a part of her liked him better like that.
"well technically, isa hasn't really changed, she has never liked psychical touch so it's not anything new." spencer's voice pulls the two out of their staring contest, both of them clearing their throats. they turned their heads in sync, "he won't know that, we don't really know each other."
"whose fault is that?" the man beside her asked, cocking a perfectly sculpted eyebrow at her. she knew he blamed her, she partially understood him, she was the one who snuck out of his bed before dawn.
"yours, you snore." she crossed her arms over her chest, standing side by side with luke as spencer took his seat. since they were early, they had their pick of what seats they wanted. isa sat down beside her friend and luke chuckled under his breath when she looked up at him, eyes dead. "you talk in your sleep." she felt spencer shift in his seat beside her, luke's words confusing him as he watched the two, studied their body language. they definitely had history.
"probably me telling you to stop snoring." she snaps back when the door suddenly opening the door, their heads snap to where emily walks in, the rest of the team following after her. "i see you've met luke,"
"yeah, they have history." spencer's words make his friend and their new coworker focus their attention to him. "barely know each other." luke waves it off and she does the same, trying to change the subject. "do we have a case?"
"we'll brief on the jet, wheels up in ten."
