isa woke up with a hangover and that only a lobotomy could fix, or that was what she told herself as she filled her cup with black coffee, finishing it in nearly five seconds when she refilled her cup.
"rough night?" the sound of her sister's voice nearly made her jump and spill her coffee but she just sighed and took another sip of the still piping hot coffee. "rough life." she turned around, leaning against the counter to get a proper look at her younger sister who was holding her small puppy under her arm.
"vada, why do you still have her? you found that dog in an alley." it had been roughly a month since her sister, nevada, found a puppy outside there building and brought her home. well to her apartment but the dog seemed to spend most of her days with isa while her younger sister went to work.
"i took her to the vet, she's got all her shots. plus archie said she could be trained to be one of those firefighter dogs." nevada raised the dog above her head, she had uncomfortably long legs for a puppy. nevada named her maren, after a character in her favourite book.
"just because she's a dalmatian, doesn't mean she's cut out for that life." nevada shook her head in disbelief and covered maren's ears. "it's not good for girls to hear their mothers talk about them like that."
"im not her mother." isa finished her second cup and pulled on her black and white striped vest on as she started buttoning it up. she didn't have time to talk about being a dog mother. "you have to be her mother," nevada gave the dog a kiss on the head as she put the dog back down, she immediately ran to isa. "see, she loves you. plus im more of a fun aunt." isa would be lying if she said the puppy didn't grow on her.
"fine but get her a dog sitter or something, i have to go to work." she tossed her car keys to her sister who would need them more than she did.
"tell luke i say hiiii."
"nooooo." the door slammed shut and isa made her way to the elevator.

it had been a week since isa got back from her mandatory sick leave, she started her day off with almost missing the elevator again but this time garcia was the one who waited for her. it was only when she got into the elevator when she finally saw luke as she made her way to stand between her old friend and her ex hook-up. and to make matters worse, he was also now garcia's mortal enemy.
"how was your weekend?" luke turned over to ask the two women, at least the guy was bold, striking up a conversation with two women who clearly weren't fond of him.
"i don't really discuss my personal life with my co-workers." garcia answered, staring straight ahead as isa fidgeted with her bracelets.
"really?"
"yeah, i keep it real low profile here." that was weird to hear from garcia, even if it was to luke. that lie nearly made isa burst out in laughter, low profile? the woman who once convinced the team they should bake hotch a birthday in the bau's kitchen was keeping a low profile.
"how about you?" luke looked from garcia to the girl beside him, "nothing special." she didn't look at him either, maybe because she was lying too. she had started drinking on friday and stopped the night before so nothing special weren't the words archie would use.
"you have a leaf in your hair." luke turned so he could fully face isa, "i like it there." that wasn't true either, she walked into three bushes on the way to work that morning.
"new fashion statement?"
"what would you know about fashion?" she turned over to face him for a moment, "nice flannel, you look like you're either a lost winchester brother or a masc lesbian."
"thank you." god, why was elevator ride so long?
"see, that wasn't so hard, do garcia, how was your weekend?" luke looked over at garcia who furrowed her brows but still didn't look at him. "well, if you must know, i spent the weekend with my boyfriend."
"did you go out or stay in?"
"we stayed in and he helped me with some fingering techniques." garcia's words were barely cold when isa sank down lower, leaning on her heels as she tried not to laugh.
"isa de angelo!" garcia called and a fit of giggles left the girl's lips as the two older agents looked down at her. "for my clarinet." isa felt the elevator stop and she knew they weren't where they were supposed to be yet.
"i'm taking the stairs to get away from you dogs." she heard garcia leave then the elevator doors shut again and her laughter started up again. she moved to stand up straight as she stood in the corner of the small elevator, trying to generate space between her and luke.
"do you remember when we were waiting for a cab and you sat on the sidewalk, laughing for like an hour because you jumped out of the bar window without getting hurt." luke stood on the other side as he spoke to her, lightly chuckling at the memory.
of course she remembered, she remembered being drunk and some asshole saying she couldn't jump out of the window, he said he'd buy her a beer if she did. the widow was on the first floor but somewhat still high, a bush broke her fall and the man kept his word and got her a beer.
"not the first time i jumped out of a window."
"so you had experience, that's cheating." luke scoffed and she just looked at him, he had a stupid grin on his face and she wanted him to stop being so happy when she was being mean to him.
seeing that she wasn't going to respond, luke spoke up again, "since you didn't ask, i guess i won't tell you about my weekend." and then he realised she definitely wasn't going to ask but he still wanted to tell her.
"i made lasagne this weekend." and then the elevator door opened and isa was the first one out. "thank god."
