the city lights flickered past the window, casting erratic shadows on the leather seats of the uber. inside, the hum of the engine was the only sound, a low, steady purr that filled the space between the passengers.
luke's head rested awkwardly against isa's shoulder, their bodies pressed together in a tangle of limbs. his arm was draped over her, and her head had slipped into the crook of his neck. They looked less like two colleagues who couldn't stand each other and more like an entwined pair of weary travelers.
isa stirred first, her eyes fluttering open to the sight of a dimly lit apartment building outside the window. she blinked in confusion, trying to piece together how they had ended up like this. the warmth of luke's breath against her skin jolted her fully awake, and she recoiled slightly, pushing him away with a less than gentle nudge.
luke grunted as he felt isa abruptly push him away, his eyes slowly opening as he was jostled out of the half-asleep state, he was in. he rubbed his eyes with the hand that had been draped over her, a low groan escaping him.
he sat up, taking in his surroundings, realizing they were outside her apartment building. he turned to face her, still rubbing his eyes with one hand, the other running through his messy hair.
"we're here already?" he mumbled; his voice rough with sleep. isa nodded, stretching out her arms as she opened the door, getting out as she held the door open, "come on, you can sleep on my floor tonight." she mumbled back, her voice a little raspier than usual.
luke followed her out of the car, his movements still slow and sluggish from sleep. he raised an eyebrow at her offer to sleep on the floor, his mind still fuzzy with sleep. "your floor? how generous of you," he snarked, a hint of sarcasm in his voice. despite the bite of his words, he couldn't deny the exhaustion that weighed him down.
"don't bite the hand that feeds you." she walked ahead of him, her bag over her arm as her body sways in exhaustion. "is that a boygenius reference?" he followed curtly after her, trying to keep himself up when she paused, turning to face him, "you know boygenius?"
luke's exhaustion seemed to vanish for a moment as he registered her question, a smirk appearing on his lips. "of course, I know boygenius," he replied, his tone nonchalant.
he raised a brow as he looked at her, waiting for her reaction. "amazed i have decent taste?"
"nah, just surprised old people listen to them," her retort was fast as she started walking again, luke's smirk widened at her comment, a spark of irritation flaring in his eyes. "i'm a handful of years older than you, that hardly counts as old," he retorted, his voice laced with faux annoyance. "sure you are buddy," she laughed, "what's your favorite song?" she used her keycard to open the front door, her eyes turning to meet his gaze.
