"911 what's your emergency?"

ㅤJane's chest was still rising up and down as one hand held the phone and the other felt around, trying to establish her surroundings. "Uh hi, yes- I fell...through a doorway? Maybe a story, a little more than 10 feet it felt like."

ㅤThere was a beat then she replied, "I'm sorry you said you fell through a door?" Her voice was as unsure as Jane's as she heard keyboard sounds through the speaker.

ㅤ"Yes, sorry. I just moved into a new building. I was looking for the laundry facilities and I thought I remembered the super saying the third on the left, after the elevator-" Her hand wrapped around what was probably her leggings. A trait that Jane had since birth was extreme stubbornness and a penchant for wanting to do things on her own. So when Zoe had told her to wait to laundry until after she was home from work, it possibly prompted her to not follow those directions.

ㅤ"Ma'am?" The operator tried to get her back on track. She sounded nice, maybe a little unsure like she was new to the job.

ㅤ"Yes, sorry! So I had my hands full of laundry so I wasn't able to use my cane to enter the - I mentioned I'm blind right?" She got up to a sitting position. "God my sister is never going to let me live this down."

ㅤ"No, you didn't mention that." She sounded more concerned. "Where are you calling from?" She heard more typing, frantic now, and a second voice in the background.

ㅤ"I'm calling from Glendale Tower Heights. My name is Jane, uh Jane Reynolds." She leaned back on her left elbow.

ㅤ"Hi Jane, my name is Maddie. Do you know if there is...any construction going on in your building?" The operator asked through the phone.

ㅤNow it was Jane's turn to take a beat. "Uh, yeah about that. The super may have also mentioned adding a basement storage unit to the building." It had been a while since she had made such a rookie mistake but the last few months have felt like there had been a hex put on her. "I feel like an idiot...although by some miracle, I don't think I broke anything! My shoulder however is definitely not okay." She hissed out in pain.

ㅤ"Okay well I already dispatched a rescue team and they are on their way to come help you. Did you hit your head at all?" May asked her.

ㅤ"No I didn't but it feels like I'm sitting on unfinished concrete, so I'm worried there will be construction equipment or debris in my way if I try to -" Jane was cut short.

ㅤ"No! Uh, no please wait for fire and rescue Jane. They'll be able to check you out for injuries and help you get out safely." May was quick to soothe. "Are you new to the city or just the building?"

ㅤ"New to L.A, moved here for work. I'm living with my sister right now but we are both originally from Virginia." She responded. "But I think my ex may have cursed me or did some animal sacrifice to make sure nothing goes my way."
