Buck's job was never convenient.

Today, however, it decided to have the worst timing ever. Jane had been in meetings all day and missed a call from Buck. When she managed to listen to his voicemail, she immediately signed off work for the day and got a cab to Maddie and Chim's apartment. He had stopped by his sisters before his shift to talk about their parents, part of their 'united front' alliance. His voicemail was short, panicked, and tearful.

"Jane?" The blind woman entered the apartment, wringing her hands nervously. "You surprised me, I didn't expect you." Maddie shut the door behind the girl and faced her.

"What did you tell Evan? Before his shift today?" Maddie led the two of them to the kitchen table.

"I don't know if I should tell...I think he deserves to do that himself." The blind woman sat down and shook her head.

"No, you need to tell me- now. I got a voicemail from him and I have never heard him so worked up. He ended it by saying 'Ask Maddie, or Chimney, or my parents. Everyone knew but me.'!" She was trying not to be rude, but the team was on a call and she hadn't been able to get through to him. The entire cab ride had been silent, only a small goodbye to her driver.

Maddie sat down across from her and sighed. "I didn't expect to have to do this twice today. Before Buck was born...we had a brother." Jane's heart dropped and her jaw came open in shock. As Maddie explained more, her voice became increasingly choked up.

"Mads..." Jane reached a hand out towards her and gripped her hand. "I don't know what to say."

"I understand if you're upset with me too. To keep such a secret from him...I thought I was protecting him."

Jane let out a short, humorless laugh. "No, don't worry about that. I understand your reasoning, and he'll come around eventually. You are his rock, he has to know that no matter what you will always be there for him."

"I'm so glad you fell in that hole." Maddie sniffled a small laugh out in between tears. "You're the closest I'll ever have to a sister. I'll always be thankful for that."

The two women talked for a little longer before Jance decided to go home. Her cab ride was short and uneventual, but as soon as she walked through their front door, Buck called her back.

"Hey!" she answered quickly.

"Hey yourself," he replied, voice a little hoarse. "Hen made me promise to tell you but I uh, had a close call tonight."

"What do you mean 'close call'?" she set her bag down and moved towards their couch.

"I got separated...if they hadn't found me I don't know if I would have gotten out. Don't worry, I got a clean bill of health, we're pulling into the station right now."
