Cars are fast, and so is Jordan’s, but with Kofy the wheel, you wouldn’t believe that. Maybe like his father, he doesn’t see well at night. Maybe he just can’t drive at all. Whatever the case, even he has begun to feel uncool.

With his eyes on the road, he takes his phone out of his pocket. He scrolls all the way to the bottom of his contact list and taps the sixth to last contact.

The dial tone beeps once and a smooth female voice comes out. “You’ve reached Waterview Memorial Hospital. This is…”

“We are en route with a stab victim.” Kofy says. “He’s a male in his twenties…”

“Okay, lemme stop you there.” She cuts in. “We don’t have blood and enough personnel at this time to handle that. I suggest you take him to…”

“We don’t have time to drive anywhere else.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with that.”

“My name is Kofy Richmond.”

“Am I supposed to know who that is?”

Kofy grunts. “My parents are Rebekah and Colin Richmond.”

“Oh, in that case, there will be a team of medics waiting at the entrance by the time you arrive.”

Against all odds and, I guess logic, Kofy is able to get to Waterview Memorial in less than fifteen minutes. There are four health workers standing outside the building with a gurney. As Kofy exits the car, the doctor and the nurses help Jordan to get Light out. They get Light on the gurney and start wheeling him inside. Meanwhile, Kofy notices there is no sense of urgency in their actions, like they have no clue that a life that has barely begun is at stake.

“Male victim of twenty-one years old.” Kofy says, as he follows the team of lifesavers. “He was stabbed in the lower abdomen about thirty minutes ago. There has been a significant loss of blood which we tried to curb by applying pressure on the area.”

One of the nurses steps away from the slow moving group and stops Kofy in his tracks. “Dial it down a bit, Mr. Richmond, and maybe watch less Grey’s Anatomy.”

“I actually prefer The Resident and The Good Doctor, but yes, I do watch a lot of Grey’s Anatomy.”

“Well, this is real life.” She answers.

“Oh, I know. Because you are making no effort whatsoever to save our friend.”

“In real life health workers are exhausted and don’t have time to run around trying to save lives like you see in those shows… unless it’s one of our own, then we go above and beyond to save their life.”

“Okay, so the shows get that part right.”

“You’re more annoying in person.” She says and gives him a stare suggesting she is feeling an emotion that can only be described as utter anger. “You and your friend will have to wait here.”

Kofy keeps his eyes on the medical team as they slowly wheel Light away because he doesn’t want to turn to see how devastated Jordan would be. He would not want to have to tell him to calm down and that things would get better and all that crap. Eventually, there is nothing at all to look at and he has to turn.

The eyes that Kofy sees on Jordan are ones that beam with rage. Kofy feels his stomach churn for no apparent reason.

“Jordan, I…” Kofi starts.

“Save it.” Jordan walks closer to Kofy, his eyes hard with rage and fear. “I never want to see you or hear from you again.”

“What are you talking about?” Kofy says, confused and his temper beginning to rise.
