Asantewaa laughs softly after a gasp, which Kofy fears is a bit too loud. Any sound at all in a supply closet is loud. Kofy would press a cupped hand over her mouth but they are both engaged, one keeping her steady and the other between her legs. She gasps again when Kofy’s lips touch her neck and lets out a deep exhale. She turns to Kofy with a look he reads as a mix of gratitude and pleasant surprise.“So…” Kofy says, helping her down from the built-in shelf on which he had put her. “how long is your shift?”
“Let’s not do small talk, okay?” She says bluntly as she pulls up her panties, evidently still trying to catch her breath.
“Good call.” Kofy says, successfully buttoning his waistcoat.
“You know,” Asantewaa says. “your friend will be discharged soon. What excuse would you use to be coming up here?”
“I was planning to stop coming,” Kofy starts and waits in vain for a reaction. “but I could change my mind if you think you’ll miss these fingers.”
“Speaking of… when you sanitize your hands, rub them till they’re completely dry. Otherwise it burns.”
Kofy nods and a smile draws on his face. “I will keep that in mind for next time.”
“Good.” Asantewaa smiles and kisses Kofy deeply on the lips.
Kofy walks for the door, his eyes still on Asantewaa. “He’s not my friend.”
“Who?” Asantewaa asks.
“Light, the guy I come to visit, is not my friend. He’s more of a friend of a friend.”
“Thanks for the clarification.” Asantewaa says. “Now, get out.”
After Kofy leaves, she takes a look around the closet. Apart from the boxes of surgical gloves Kofy swept out of the shelf before carrying her onto it, nothing else is out of place in the unlit space. When she feels enough time has passed, she takes in a deep breath and also steps out.
After driving past it several times, Nana Poku finally musters enough courage to go through the gateway of Nkonim Hostel. As an off-campus hostel, no keycard is required to gain entry. He smiles and salutes the security personnel who regard him with a look that appear to be blank or shock. It’s disturbingly unclear to him. He sucks his teeth every second or so as he ascends the stairs all the way up to Fifth.
“Eighty-seven steps?!” He says, hearing himself wheeze as he breathes. “That felt like eight hundred steps.”
He brings himself to a rapid stop even before he gets to the door of his destination, because it is opened and a tall dark young woman with short locks comes out. Their eyes meet instantly.
“What do you want?” She asks, the look on her face nothing less than utter disdain.
“The question is not what, Ameena,” Nana Poku practically gasps after every pause. “but who, and her name is Zelda.”
Maintaining her look, Ameena asks, “What are you going on about? I can barely make out a word of what you are saying.”
Nana Poku stands up right, because he needed to bend in order to breathe for some reason. “It takes a lot of steps to get up here.” His index finger completely misses the direction of the staircase behind him, which he apparently intends to point at without looking.
“Zelda doesn’t want to see you right now.” Ameena says. “And as you can see, I am on my way out.”
“Let her tell me herself, then.”
With a sly smile and her eyes on Nana Poku’s, Ameena slowly steps out and shuts the door loudly.
“Oopsie.” Ameena’s smile widened.
