LYRA GOT SIDETRACKED EASILY, was Jason's thought as the girl beside him rambled on, showing him all the places in Camp Half-Blood. The climbing wall, the Cabins, the arena, everything.
Honestly, it was cute. He watched with a small smile as she spouted some facts about the strawberry fields that he knew he wouldn't remember.
Jason didn't know if it was a Lyra thing or a child of Apollo thing, but when the rays of the sun hit her, a barely visible halo formed around her, one that wouldn't be seen unless someone paid special attention. Her skin shimmered, as if someone had dumped a whole load of glitter on it. When her brown eyes caught the sunlight, he swore they turned into pools of molten caramel.
"Here we are," Lyra said, smiling, "The Big House, camp headquarters."
He tore her eyes away from her to the manor in front of him. Every molecule in Jason's body screamed at him to turn back and leave.
"I am not supposed to be here."
Lyra frowned, "Of course you are. You're a demigod."
She said it so simply. Like it was a fact. Like he didn't feel he was on enemy ground. Like his stomach didn't churn at the very thought.
Footsteps – no, hooves sounded on the porch. Chiron appeared.
"Chiron," Lyra greeted, "this is Jason."
The centaur started to smile at the boy before the color drained from his face.
"You," his eyes flared, "you should be dead."
Lyra blinked, "Geez, you really know how to make someone feel welcome, Chiron."
"Come in," Chiron invited— well, ordered more like— them inside. He trotted over to the empty wheelchair on the porch. The centaur slipped off his quiver and bow and backed up to the chair, which opened like a magician's box. Chiron gingerly stepped into it with his back legs and began scrunching himself into a space that should've been much too small.
But then again, magic was very versatile.
Jason almost heard a truck's reversing noises in his head — beep, beep, beep. The centaur's lower half disappeared until he appeared to be a regular mortal guy in a wheelchair.
That probably made a very clever disguise. Like, would you ever imagine a guy in a wheelchair to suddenly get up and reveal that he's surprise surprise, half horse! Jason fought back a smile at that mental image.
"Follow me," Chiron ordered, "We have lemonade,"
Lyra's lips twitched upwards and she muttered into his ear, "Welcome to the dark side, we have cookies."
Jason stifled a laugh behind his hand, shivering slightly when her warm breath hit his ear.
The living room looked like it had been swallowed by a rain forest. Grapevines curved up the walls and across the ceiling, which Jason found a little strange. He didn't think plants grew like that inside, especially in the winter, but these were leafy green and bursting with bunches of red grapes.
