Chapter 10 - Cool kids
POV: Julia Allen
It was school again and man did it suck. I mean sure, I got to see my friends but Hugh had been avoiding me all week. I really didn't no what his problem was and it was killing me.
I was sitting under the oak tree at lunch time with Stella and G. The sun was shinning and the sky was crystal clear. We were just beginning to get comfortable when Lucy came rushing up to us. Her hair was unusually tame today but her expression was the opposite.
After taking a few deep breaths and collecting herself she finally said, “guess what?”
Did she finally find her hair straighter? I held in a laugh.
“What?” Stella questioned.
Stella smirked for she held the oh so important information. What could it possible be?
“Lachie O’Brian asked us to sit with him and his friends at lunch today.”
“You are joking!” G exclaimed. I could tell that G and Lucy were thrilled but I couldn’t say the same for Stella and I. We weren’t really into that scene. I also knew that it was going to be pretty awkward between Hugh and I.
“Can’t we just stick to the usual?” I asked. I had a crack at a puppy dog face but I probably just looked like a constipated baby.
“No way! This is an opportunity of a life time Jules.” Lucy pouted.
“Fine,” Stella said quietly. “We’ll come but just this once.” I looked at Stella. This was going to be an interesting time.
“Hi Lucy, Lachie called, over here.”
“Hey babe, she winked back.” What was that! She was definitely not telling me something. I was beginning to get het up in my complicated problem when I was drawn back into reality.
Deep breaths, I thought to myself. This was Lucy’s dream guy so I was doing it for her. The rest of us slowly made our way up behind Lucy.
We sat down and Lachie started the introductions. “This is Nick, Tom, Bradley and Hugh.”
“We know who they are,” I murmured, it's not like we live under a rock. Luckily Lucy didn’t hear or she would have killed me with a glare of death.
“So, Bradley said, who are these other fine ladies.”
“I’m G and this is Stella,” she managed to stutter out. Well that was a bit more progress than last time with Luke. I smiled as the memory of their priceless faces.
“What about you babe,” Bradley smirked at me.
“Julia,” Hugh said aggressively. Hugh seemed rather rude and possessive for someone who was avoiding me. Well I guess I was like his sister. Hugh suddenly did this random eye thing with Bradley. Some guy thing that I was never going to understand.
“Sorry dude,” he managed to whisper. What the hell was that? Hugh obviously is trying to make every guy in the school hate me. Couldn’t he just let it go? I was more than capable of handling myself around 'Bradley' types.
“Well, Lachie said, interrupted the angst. “What subjects so you guys have next?” “Lucy and I have geography.” I smiled to myself, I was sure going to quiz her about that later on.
“I have chemisty,” Stella mumbled. She was really smart and should be proud of it, not everyone can say that they have never got lower than an A!
“So do I,” Tom said. A small blush appeared on Stella's cheeks before she hid behind her hair.
Very, very cute.
“Cool Stella, I said, I have PE with these knuckle heads,” gesturing at Hugh and Bradley.
“Knuckle heads?” Bradley questioned as he put his hand to his heart in mock hurt.
“Sad but true,” I mocked back. Hugh was clearly unamused by this interaction so he quickly put an end to it.
“Bradley, I just saw Sarah winking at you.” Hugh said truthfully but I could see straight through his fake façade. He was pretty good at lying but whenever he did he got this little twinkle in his left eye that was a total give away. I held back a smirk.
Sarah Miller is one of those gorgeous girls that is one hell of bitch. She is the most popular girl in the year and had been trying to get Hugh’s attention for ever. In the mean time she would just flirt with other guys hoping to make Hugh realise what he was missing out with. Not much according to the source himself. Hugh was more than happy to direct Bradley over there.
Bradley politely excused himself from the group before as predicted, heading straight over to Sarah. I chuckled.
Hugh really was an evil mastermind. But why did he do it? I was going to get to the bottom of this, no matter the consequences.
PE started as usual with a gentle warm up. “Hugh”, I called.
“Miss me babe?” he smirked. Well at least his usual arrogant self was back.
“We need to talk.” Maybe that sounded too serious because he ran off. “Wait up Collins.” Too late I was going to have to chase him. I started running and finally caught up to him as he eased into a jog.
“What?” he said. He looked at aggravated. I hadn't seen him like this very often.
“Why did you lie to Bradley about Sarah?” I asked. He seemed to take a sigh of relief but still didn’t answer.
That was it!
“What is your problem lately? One minute we are teasing each other and joking around as usual, the next you are awkward and embarrassed, and then the full circle is complete when you are a rude and inconsiderate jerk,” I yelled.
The outburst definitely came out harsher than I intended.
Hugh’s face fell; he looked at the ground and shuffled his feet.
“Do you really think I am rude, inconsiderate jerk?” My heart missed a beat.
He just looked so gorgeously adorable when he was vulnerable.
“No you big dummy!” I cried. I felt like an idiot but I really wanted to get to the bottom of this. “Still Collins, why did you do it?”
“I was just protecting you.” I suddenly felt like even more of an idiot. I face palmed.
“Sorry Hugh. I’m know I am like a sister to you but I am a big girl now. I can fend for myself and deal with the 'Bradley' types. Thanks for caring. Though Bradley’s face sure was priceless.”
Looking into his eyes I smiled.
He muttered something under his breath before saying, “Yeah, Bradley’s face was truly a Collins classic”.
