Chapter 8 - BBQ # 2
POV: Julia Allen
I mentally prepared myself for the jokes and laughter of the Collins boys. I felt horrible. I let my family go in first.
Sitting in the car I took a few deep breaths. The sooner I get in there the sooner this can be over with, I told myself. I finally got the courage to make my way inside. Shoulders back I marched up to the door.
"And she fell in the mud head first!" I could hear Jake and Eddie retelling the story to the rest of the boys.
I walked in. I didn't care anymore. It couldn't get any worse, could it?
I marched straight past the boys and made my way up stairs. The laughter erupted as I headed straight for the bathroom. I passed Tia and Mum on the way.
"You poor thing," Tia fussed. "A hot shower is exactly what you need." I wasn't complaining.
The jets of hot water on my back were like heaven. This was almost worth it. But the heavenly shower had to end sometime.
I jumped out the shower to the realisation - I had no towels and no clean clothes. "Shit!" I cursed. This really wasn't my day. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. I jumped back into the shower.
No one was going to see me butt naked. "Who is it?" I called out.
"It's me Hugh. I brought you some towels," he said.
"Thank you so much. You have no idea how much of a lifesaver you are," I exclaimed.
"Do you want me to drop them at the door," he asked.
"I'll just come over and you can pass them through thanks." I stuck my head and hand around the door.
Hugh was clearly embarrassed as his face turned a light shade of pink. I was just about to shut the door when I realised I still had no clothes.
"Hey Hugh, do you reckon you could grab me some clothes?" I asked hopefully. This made him turn an even darker pink.
"Ok," he said hesitantly before scurrying down the hallway. I dried myself fully before there was another knock at the door.
"Hugh is that you," I called.
"Yes," he replied. "Mum said that I should give you one of my t-shirts and some old shorts."
"Ok," I said. This didn't sound too bad. I opened the door as I was wrapped in a towel. "Thanks again Hugh, without you I would have been trapped in the bathroom forever." He quickly handed the clothes over and rushed away without saying a word.
That was odd; Hugh was normally as chatty as can be. I quickly closed the door and put the clothes on. The t-shirt was down to my thighs so I decided I would give the shorts a miss and wear it as a dress. Finally I was ready to go down stairs.
I found everyone in the lounge room looking at a bunch of family photo albums. I tried my luck at sneaking in but of course luck was not on my side. "Julia!" Max screamed before running at me full pelt.
"Whoa there buddy," I said before taking a seat between the twins and the Luke.
"Nice outfit Princess," Luke whispered with a smile. "There have been some nice pictures of you in there too you know." I cringed. Well this was going to awkward.
"And here is a picture of Hugh and Julia playing dress up" said Tia. A laughter echoed around the room. I was dressed in a football jumper and Hugh was dressed up in my princess dress.
"We always knew you were special," Trent joked. Hugh punched him in the stomach before making his way out of the room. He looked pretty angry and embarrassed. I thought he looked pretty cute.
Trent cringed in pain.
"C'mon Hugh, it's not that bad," Justin called out behind him.
"Julia and Luke, you should go and see how he is," my Dad said.
"Alright Charlie," Luke said before we also made our way out the room.
"What's up with him?" I asked Luke.
"Don't know." I reckon Hugh knew something I didn't for sure.
"He's been acting weird since I got here, especially when he came and gave me some spare clothes." Luke looked at me at me funny. Was there something I just wasn't getting?
"What's going on?" I said.
"Let's just find Hugh." I knew he was changing the topic but I couldn't do anything. Eventually we found Hugh in the upstairs lounge room watching TV.
"What are you watching," Luke asked him. Hugh looked a bit startled at our sudden appearance.
"Nothing, just thinking." He looked embarrassed and torn between thoughts.
"Remember when we used to have the mega sleepovers here," I said trying to cheer him up.
"Sure do Julia," Luke said. "We'd have the sleeping bag all over the floor, pillows around the room in case of a sudden pillow fight. We would stay up all night and play games like, truth or dare, wink murder." Luke said trailing off into memories.
"We haven't had one of those in years," Hugh said.
"I feel like watching a movie," Luke remarked. I kind of felt like one too.
All the drama this afternoon had tired me out and I was in need of a rest. "Blast from the past night!" he said excitedly. "Toy Story or Monsters Inc?"
"Toy Story!" Hugh and I shouted in sync. We smiled at each other as we remembered. He would dress up as Woody, I as Jessie. It was our favourite game of all time.
"Play it Luke," I said taking a seat next to Hugh. Luke joined me and we began to watch the movie in silence. Eventually I grabbed a pillow and put it on Hugh's lap.
"Mind if I lie down," I asked. He nodded. I continued watching the movie but I was drifting off.
The last thing I remember is soft hand running though my tangled hair and a whispered ... "Night Julia."
