There happened to be a lot of planets that the Galra destroyed, and Lance's home was one of them.
He noticed, his parents never spoke of their home, they only carried on traditions in secret. Lance hated it, pretending to be a human boy every day of his miserable life.
Every day walking to school and being a normal human boy with tan skin and bright normal blue eyes.
But it made going home every day even better. His family owned a small house for humans, but the ocean was only a short walk away.
Every day he'd walk with his sister, who like his father is a human,to the ocean.
Every day his eyes shone brighter, and as he dove in the water his blue scales shone, and his legs morphed together.
His ears grew longer, his eyes sharper, his lungs turned to gills.
He'd laugh and play.
But that's all gone, because now he's in space. Now he's alone, no ocean in sight.

Metal against metal clashed in the training room, Allura watched as Lance fought against the
gladiator, his movements elegant and swift, but his blows helf not power. He was failing helplessly.
He wouldn't be if he had his weapon, not this flimsy ass sword. More training exercises, learning how to use weapons that we were not familiar with.
Or so Lance thought bitterly. Keith probably enjoyed this.
Hell, Lance is going to enjoy watching Keith try to use the sword, Keith's lack of flexibility will be very laughable. Keith's training is impressive, but a sword with a thin blade like this is hard to use. And Keith doesn't think any farther than his next slash.
Lance was snapped out of his distracting thoughts far too quickly for him to act properly, the gladiator was way to fucking fast, way faster than any Galra robot.
The gladiator's sword was brought down with so much weight it could break a human bone, it sure as hell would break Lance's thin bones. Lance is lucky the blade is too thin to do anything but cut, but that also meant his sword was not thick enough to block the blow.
Lance was made for swift movements, not this shit.
So naturally, not a minute later he was sprawled on the ground getting scolded.
“How are you humans supposed to save this universe if you can not take a single blow! All you're good at is dodging!”
Allura was an angel, with her white hair and gleaming eyes, but she has such a shrill disappointment voice. Lancre really wished his hearing wasn't so good right now, he might go deaf by the time he's twenty-five at this rate.
“And Lance, we've been over this so many times! Even Hunk’s understood it!”
She shouted like it would help, flailing her arms in the air. Hunk face dropped slightly.
“You know, I'm better at the shield thing, shooting and hiding”
Hunk mimicked his words, hiding behind his invisible shield. but it was nothing to Allura, she broke it so easily.
“How can we have paladins that do nothing but hide and fight like cowards! Keith and Shiro are the only ones who have a shred of talent in this field!”
She was going at it today, ripping everyone apart. Coran stood behind her nodding along, twisting his orange mustache. Maybe eventually he'd feel bad and offer us a break, but it didn't look like he felt bad enough yet.
“I am better at dealing with tech, I think I am the only one who has any talent-”
Pidge very helpfully added, Allura was practically foaming at the mouth.
“I am a engender, and I like to think I am on the same level as you”
Hunk crossed his arms, and turned away from Pidge, who's glasses reflected the light like some protagonist.
Keith grumbled something like the emo he is, Shiro opened his mouth to calm them down, like a good leader.
Lance didn't bother getting up as he laid on his back listening to his friends argue over this, it was more amusing than fighting, plus his body was screaming at him to stop. And to get to water, but he's used to ignoring that one.
Just before Shiro could begin to speak alarms blared, the castle lights started to flash their violent red. Lance shot up, ditching the sword and summoning his bayard as he rushed, only a few steps behind everyone else rushing to see what's happening.
As they ran into the control room, Alurra was already pulling up multiple techy things Lance couldn't name, a screen popped up voicing a distress beacon.
“Please help, the Galra are – - - attack —-- – Voltron if your — -”
The call for help is short, cut off. It was a newer planet, Lance didn't bother listening to the name, or who inhabited the planet as he ran to his lion.
Lance was just a fighter after all, he needed to help those people rather than hear unnecessary information Shiro or Pidge already memorized.
Instead he rushed to the warmth of the blue lion, an unfamiliar warmth that she had introduced him to.
Lance flew through the inky darkness of space in the direction of the Galra cruisers, following close to the castle and the other lions.
Lance shot off, dragging Blues claws down every cruiser, it was only times like these that he could allow his body to relax, for his silvery scales to shine.
Metal against metal began to clash between the lions and the fighter ships, it was just another fight to be won after all.
