ARA STRAIGHTENED UP JUST IN TIME TO SEE BLACK SHAPES emerging out of thin air all around them, blocking their way left and right; eyes glinted through slits in hoods, and at least a dozen lit wand tips were pointing directly at their hearts. Ginny gave a gasp of horror.
"To me, children," repeated the drawling voice of Lucius Malfoy as he held out his hand, palm up.
Ara's hand tightened around the blue ball, gripping her wand firmly with her other hand as she and Harry stood side by side at the front, facing Malfoy. She made a quick glance around the hooded figures, counting the ones she could see, they were clearly outnumbered. . .
"To me," said Malfoy yet again.
"Where's Sirius?" Harry said.
Ara inhaled a quiet breath, she wasn't quite sure why Harry decided to ask that question, perhaps he was still in denial and actually thought that Sirius was here and it hadn't been a made-up image planted in his mind by Voldemort to get them there.
As Ara expected, several of the Death Eaters laughed. A harsh female voice from the midst of the shadowy figures to their left said triumphantly, "The Dark Lord always knows!"
"Always," echoed Malfoy softly. "Now, give me the prophecies."
"I want to know where Sirius is!"
"I want to know where Sirius is!" mimicked the woman to Ara's left. She and her fellow Death Eaters had closed in so that they were mere feet away from them all, the light from their wands dazzling Ara and Harry's eyes.
"You've got him," said Harry. Ara could see the panic swirling in his eyes, and her chest tightened with dread, she could tell that he was coming to his senses. "He's here. I know he is."
It almost sounded as if he was trying to convince himself.
"Harry. . ." Ara whispered quietly enough for only him to hear. It was a low warning, her tone said more than a hundred words ever could. She was telling him, internally shouting at him, Sirius wasn't here. . .
Sirius wasn't here.
Ara had never felt so stupid in her life. She'd fallen for a false vision. A false vision. She should've known that there was no way for her dad to be in the Department of Mysteries, she should've sent an owl and waited for an answer about his whereabouts instead of impulsively deciding to just save him. Her choices led to this situation they were now trapped in, surrounded by enemies and outnumbered. She would have felt better—less guilty and foolish—if it was just her trapped in this endless shadow of Death Eaters, but it wasn't just her. Ginny, Ron, Atlas, Hermione, Luna, Neville, Harry. . .they were in this mess with her. Ara would lose her mind if something happened to them because she was idiotic enough to believe in something that wasn't real.
"The little baby woke up fwightened and fort what it dweamed was twoo," said the woman in a horrible, mock-baby voice.
Both Ara and Harry felt Ron and Atlas—who were close behind them— stir.
"Don't do anything," Ara mumbled, acting now would just end in disaster, and they would certainly end up losing.
The woman who had mimicked Harry let out a raucous scream of laughter.
