Summer, 1995
"Harry! Come here," Sirius waved his hand at the baffled teenager, he stood in the doorway of a study in Grimmauld Place, his usual carefree expression replaced with something more serious as he urged Harry to follow him.
"Er—what's wrong?" Harry questioned when Sirius shut the door rather abruptly.
"Sit!" Sirius practically commanded.
Confused but too cautious to argue, Harry sat down on one of the old armchairs, dust rising to the air as he did so. Sirius followed suit, settling across from him with a deliberate slowness, his gaze heavy, calculating, as if trying to read something deep within Harry's expression. He laced his fingers together, his usual grin replaced with a tight line of concentration.
"What—"
"What are your intentions with my daughter?" Sirius cut him off, narrowing his eyes at him.
"W-what?" Harry blinked twice, thrown off balance by the suddenness of the question as his mouth went dry. He'd never seen Sirius like this. This wasn't the teasing godfather Harry had known, no, this was a dad, a protective, fiercely loving dad, and it made his heart beat faster.
"Listen, Harry, Ava might've called me daft back in the day but I'm not blind," Sirius said, resting his forearms on his knees as he leaned closer. "You fancy my daughter, what I'd like to know is what you plan to do about it."
"I don't fancy Ara," Harry denied but the blush on his cheeks betrayed him as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"Oh, spare me," Sirius muttered with a faint, knowing chuckle. "I'm pretty sure everyone is aware of your feelings except for Ara, my poor little wolf seems to have inherited her mother's obliviousness," He gave a watery laugh, shaking his head.
Harry said nothing, suddenly very aware of the way his hands were fidgeting with the band of his watch. He had long realised that he wasn't as sly as he thought he was.
"As much as I'd like to threaten you, you're still my godson, so I suppose I'll go easy on you. Atlas reckons I should leave you be, but he's not a father, he doesn't understand my duty." Sirius sighed, rolling his eyes rather dramatically. "In all fairness, my Aves did warn me about you two many years ago, I suppose I owe her ten galleons now," the smile on his face and the way his eyes had drifted over to the window to stare at the sky was a heartbreaking sight, it was almost as if he'd forgotten Harry was there for a moment. His gaze had softened in a way Harry had never seen before.
Sirius met Harry's gaze once again, his voice softer, more solemn now, "I don't want her to get hurt, Harry, but I know you. I know you're good and from the way you look at my daughter as if she was the only star lighting up your sky. . .I know she's safe with you." Harry opened his mouth to speak, but Sirius held up a hand, silencing him with a quiet, almost imperceptible shake of his head. "What I'm asking of you is to not let her down. . .from the little time I've spent with her I know she's fierce when it comes to emotions, and if she feels the same way about you, which I'm fairly sure she does. . .she'll go to infinite lengths for you. I just hope you can keep up with her."
