Salama and her colleagues strolled down the riverbank to chat with some local fisherwomen. Eager to know what they thought about the new resort planned for the area, she couldn't help but ask. One of the women looked out at the river and said, "We have mixed feelings about it. It could benefit the island if the resort doesn't harm our beautiful river and respects our traditional fishing methods. It might create job opportunities and help preserve our local way of life." Curious, Kaiona asked about who was protecting the zone where the coral reefs were located. They were told that a team of marine scientists was in charge of caring for the coral reefs. She then gave them the address of the research center where they could find the scientists.
Upon reaching the research center, they were met by Dr. Rebecca, who extended them a warm welcome. Dr. Rebecca graciously guided them through the research center, detailing their exploration of the marine ecosystem and their efforts to safeguard it. They had even developed eco-friendly fishing equipment and established restricted fishing zones in specific areas to aid in the restoration of fish populations.
The night before their important presentation, Salama and her team gathered in the conference room to give their proposal a final once-over. Salama paid close attention to calculating and estimating the carbon footprint at every project stage. She prioritised about highlighting the importance of preserving the local ecosystem, especially the fragile coral reefs, which were Kanan's prized natural treasure. They spent the evening rehearsing, taking turns, and fine-tuning their presentation.
The much-anticipated meeting had finally arrived. The discussion focused on a visionary concept centred around the four elements: Air, Terra, Fire, and Water. Kainoa initiated the conversation by passionately delving into the element "Air." He emphasized the project's commitment to achieving carbon negativity. He underlined incorporating over 60% of the area as lush green space and open areas for the community to relax and appreciate. As Kainoa concluded, the room brimmed with excitement for what was to come. Following Kainoa's compelling presentation, Andrea seamlessly transitioned as she took the floor to explore the element "Terra." With a captivating presence, she highlighted the project's unique emphasis on constructing enchanting mud houses that exuded an unparalleled sense of magic and beauty. Andrea eagerly elaborated on her team's intention to infuse every room with elements of fun and adventure, thereby elevating the overall experience for visitors to the project.
Salama began her presentation by focusing on the element "Fire." She passionately spoke about the environmental impact of incineration of waste, emphasizing the harmful effects on the air quality due to carbon emissions. She proposed a creative solution involving local communities in creating furniture and interior design elements using recycled, refurbished, and upscaled items. Each Item telling a story of the local communities.
As the team gathered for the last segment of their presentation, Salama stood up and took a deep breath. The focus was on the element of "Water," the most crucial aspect of their project. She began by emphasizing the vital importance of preserving the coral reefs in the area. Salama spoke passionately about the team's dedication to water management within the resort, ensuring that it would have minimal impact on the local marine ecosystem. She highlighted their collaboration with local scientists and marine biologists to develop sustainable practices to preserve the coral reefs. The team's innovative water management techniques, such as efficient wastewater treatment and conservation measures, were instrumental in minimizing the resort's environmental footprint.
Salama and her team felt a profound responsibility to continue Amala's legacy. The name "Amala's Heritage" was chosen as the proposed resort name, to honour her and to signify the resort's dedication to preserving the island's rich ecosystem.
The Winders team was impressed with the presentation and said they would reply soon. The members of Salama's team felt relieved and excited at the same time. They had put their hearts and souls into creating a vision for the resort, honouring the local ecosystem and community. As they left the meeting room, they couldn't help but discuss the positive feedback they had received from the Winders team."We nailed the presentation," Andrea exclaimed with a smile. They were genuinely impressed by our dedication to preserving the environment and integrating local traditions into the project.
As Salama and the Team were heading back, Salama noticed a lot of children wearing a symbol on their T-shirts. Curious, Salama asked Ingham, "What does that symbol stand for?" With a warm smile, Ingham replied, "Ah, that symbol represents Kanan. It symbolizes harmony that has been with us for thousands of years." The symbol embodied the interconnectedness and balance of all aspects of life on the island of Kanan. It represented the harmony between nature, the local community, and the island's traditions.
