The woman in the blue dress walked into Mark's ward and saw him sitting on the bed, staring out the window. She dropped her bag beside the bed and sat next to him. He neither spoke nor acknowledged her presence. Quietly, she slipped her hand into her bag and pulled out her phone. He still said nothing.
"Master," she said calmly, studying his sickly face. In all the years she had known him and worked as one of his most trusted doctors, she had never seen him in such a terrible state.
"Dr. Clementine. What is it?" he asked coldly.
"How are you feeling now? Is the pain still—"
"I am still healing. It's much better now, thank you," he cut in, his voice almost robotic.
She stared at him for a moment, her gaze softening before she smiled warmly. He had always been the type to hide his pain because he hated pity.
"If it hurts, please don't hesitate to call the doctors—"
"I know exactly what to do, Doctor," he interrupted again. "Why are you here?"
"To see your face. To make sure you're alive," she replied with a nervous smile. "If you don't mind, I can find you a caretaker after you're discharged. A woman who can take care of—"
"Why are you here?" he asked again.
She sighed and pulled out her phone, beginning to scroll through it. "You're no fun, Master."
After a while, her eyes lit up when she found what she was looking for.
"Here." She turned the phone around and showed it to Mark.
Mark reluctantly looked at the screen. She saw his expression shift, though he tried hard to maintain his composure. She withdrew the phone, moved to the next picture, and showed him again. This time, he grabbed the phone from her hand and pulled it closer.
"There you go. Your sweet little Emily," she said, sounding disappointed. "I actually saw her coming down from the floor with the hotel rooms. She must've been in there with that man."
He looked too stunned to speak.
"Has she come to see you yet? I mean, it doesn't make sense that your husband is fighting for his life in the hospital while you're in a hotel room with another man. Unless, of course, you're just a whore."
"I... I know him," Mark said softly. "I've seen his face before."
"A business associate of yours?" she asked with interest.
"No. Before Emily ran away, he was in the pictures that were mailed to me."
Mark slowly looked at her.
"He's her boyfriend. He's always been her boyfriend."
A hollow laugh escaped his lips.
Dr. Clementine looked at him, her face turning expressionless with concern.
"How sure are we that he's her boyfriend?" she asked carefully.
Mark did not respond. Instead, relief slowly washed over his face. He looked back at the phone and became still. She watched him closely and began regretting why she had shown him the pictures at all, but he deserved to know.
"Master, I'll be leaving now," she said as she stood and reached for her phone.
He neither responded nor looked at her. He was too focused on swiping through the pictures.
"I'll be taking my phone now," she reminded him, her hand still stretched out.
Silence filled the room once again.
