V A L E R I A

As it was the weekend, I used this opportunity to go and see Gabriel. I sat outside with him, on the wooden porch, looking out at the sunlight that shines through the trees and listening to the calm sounds of birds chirping.

But it was not enough to make me relax. I confessed, "I'm afraid to go back, Gabriel."

The demon, whoever it is, seems to only be getting smarter. More angels have died. Only four of us are still alive. I say, "They will find out the 4 left. We need to come here, where it's safer."

He looks out, the sun hitting his face while he thinks.

"What if they find us here, and all of us are here?" he questions. I fall silent. "We need somebody there, somebody to find out who it is so that we can stop them."

I shake my head. I say, "They are strong Gabriel, and smart. I'm scared there may be no stopping them."

He turns to look at me, reading the worry on my face. He says strongly, "There is, Valeria. I can stop them. I am not just a regular angel, you know this, Dear. I will be able to stop them when the time comes."

I nod. I began chewing on my bottom lip as I remembered something. I asked, referencing what a teacher had said on the school trip, "Is there a curse on the demon who killed all the angels?"

Gabriel thinks. He says, "I'm not sure, Valeria. But what angels want most is to protect their own. I would not be surprised if they put a spell on them in their final moments."

I nod. I kept sitting outside with him, wishing I could stay here forever, but I knew I was needed back at the school.

The cafeteria is as busy as usual. People stick to their cliques. I sit with Hazel and Cristella, I glance over at where Aaron used to sit, feeling guilty for him not being here. Angels feel guilt for every life they cannot save, no matter who they are.

"Oh my god, guys, Dean is walking past us," Cristella basically squeals. She runs her fingers through her hair and pushes her boobs up in her shirt. "Tell me if he looks at me."

Hazel and I watch him as he walks past us. Looking out the window.

"So? Did he look?" she asks once he passes.

"He was looking out the window...." Hazel says while stabbing her pasta.

Cristella looks as if she can't believe this. She thinks, looks over at the window, then her face lights up. She says as if it were obvious, "Guys, that's because you can see our reflections in the windows since it's dark outside! He was totally just looking at me through the reflection so it wouldn't seem obvious!"

Hazel and I exchange glances and both drawl out, "Right."

I rip a piece of my muffin off before popping it into my mouth. As I chew, Cristella asks, "Um, Valeria? Why is Adonis Priest looking at you?"

I look up and see his dark eyes looking at me from across the room. I don't mention how often I see him or talk to him, I know people would think differently of me if I did. She adds, "Does this have anything to do with you two dancing together?"

"No," I say quickly. "No, it doesn't, maybe he's just looking at somebody else."

Hazel laughed, "Hopefully."

My eyebrows lowered slightly as I ripped another piece off. It was silent for a while before I finally said, "Maybe he isn't as bad as everybody says he is."
