"Please, Father, it's my birthday," I beg.

He tries to get away from me, but I step quickly, nearly falling over my own feet. I continued, "I want to see Earth. I want to feel a flower."

He abruptly stops walking and looks down at me. He says, a bit frustrated, "I don't understand why you want to see Earth so badly, Luella. Heaven is where your home is, it's where all your people are."

"I know, Father," I nod while playing with my fingers for comfort. "But I'm 18. I want to see it myself, I want to feel the wind."

His eyes move around my face. My father is The Lord - he hated being told what to do as he was in charge. But I was his only child. I do an overly wide smile at him while waiting for his answer.

He sighs and mutters under his breath. He says, "Fine. You can go to Earth - but just this once."

"Thank you!" I cheered. I jumped up and hugged him.

I turn and start walking. Somebody smiles at me as I pass. They ask me, "Did he finally say yes?"

"He did," I smile. Everybody knew how badly I wanted this.

I reach the golden gates, and for the first time in my life, I step out of them. I bring my wings out as I begin flying down. I fly with a smile, feeling the wind against my face, it was warm, my wings flapped behind me.

I land in a meadow. I feel grass against my feet for the first time. It feels surreal, to breathe in this air, to touch this grass, to look up at the sun, to feel the wind. I look around, I see flowers growing nearby. Happily, I run over to them. They are red roses.

I pick small white flowers that grow around them out and begin putting them into my braided brown hair.

"I promise this isn't a terrible pickup line, but you truly do look like an angel," I hear a boy say behind me.

I jump and stand to my feet. I quickly put my wings away, but it was useless, he had already seen them.

He's tall and wears black, the same color as his hair. His eyes are brown.

"Relax," he says gently. "I won't tell anybody."

Nervously, I swallow. He leaves imprints in the grass as he walks toward me. I question, hesitantly, "You won't?"

"No," he says. He looks me up and down. "What's your name?"

"Luella," I tell him. I knew I shouldn't, he was a stranger, yet I did anyway. "What's yours?"

"I'm Adonis," he tells me.

The birds chirp and the man takes yet another step toward me.

"You're very beautiful, Luella," he tells me. I smile. I had never had a boy compliment me.

"So are you," I say. "And I like your hair."

I reach up to touch it, but he quickly steps back. My eyebrows pull together in confusion and my smile leaves my face.

"Um - we cannot touch," he tells me.

My confusion grows bigger. I question, "Why not?"

"I'm...something different," he says to me. "Something that cannot touch an angel. It would burn us both."

"Like a vampire?" I question.

"Yes," he nods. "Like a vampire."

I knew I should no longer speak to the vampire in front of me. I'm about to turn to leave when he says, "Why don't you come inside my house?"
