She searched the house for forty-five minutes. The dog had obviously been abducted by aliens. She stood stock still, straining every sense to try and figure out where he was.
What was that noise?
A faint scratching sound was coming from under the stairs. Opening the door to the crawlspace underneath the staircase, she yelped with relief.
Pip shot out from the nook, running into the guest bedroom at the back of the house.
"How on earth did you manage that, Little Houdini?" Brixton said, closing the door and locking it.
She placed his water dish and dog food bowl on a serving tray. A first for her, but what the heck.
"Pippy," she said, "come out from under the bed. Nobody's going to hurt you. I promise. Did you hear something that scared you?"
Picking up bits of food, she coddled and coaxed the little dog until he came out of hiding. Gobbling down his supper, she stood up and smiled.
"You want to hang out here, it's okay with me," she said, making sure to leave the light on as she exited the room.
Bending at the waist, she could just make out his cute little butt in the shadows under the bed.
"You really are worse than a child sometimes. Not that you care."
