It was the first day back at University after vacations and I had overslept.
I had rushed out of my apartment, my book bag hanging off my shoulder and my breakfast half eaten in my hand. My car had broken down a few days ago which meant I needed to catch the bus.
And I missed it.
So now I was waiting for my Uber, only ten minutes left till class started. At this point, I could run and get there before the Uber even got here. I groaned and stared down at the map, watching the car pause in the middle of the street, the road turning red. Traffic was the worst when you needed to get somewhere urgently.
I groaned, canceled the Uber, and started walking. I was so going to be late. I was basically jogging to the school now, freaking out. Milo had decided to skip because "No one does anything on the first day anyway."
But that wasn't a good excuse in my books. I was a straight-A student. Albeit, it was a little hard for me to keep up my top notes, I still managed. There were only a few times when I slacked off, but I jumped right back to the top.
My first year at Uni was a little tough. Since I wasn't exactly outgoing, I was seen as the quiet kid. You'd think those stereotypes ended in high school. Those who were just in Uni because their parents put them there, slacked off and tried to get me to do their work.
I have to admit, I'm in no place to play the victim right now. The first semester I charged 10 dollars per essay. By the end of my semester, I had enough money to buy groceries for 2 weeks.
I ended up putting a halt to it because 1) it was not good. 2) I needed to focus on my own work.
I stopped jogging and stood on the sidewalk, panting softly. The building was only a block away now but I was not in the shape to do that. A sleek black car rolled up next to me, putting me on full alert. The window slowly rolled down, a head popping up from the driver's side.
"Hey, are you going to Lavender Arts University? I'm on my way there right now, I can give you a ride?" He asked politely, I looked at him hesitantly, debating whether or not I should risk getting kidnapped. "I'm a professor, or well, a substitute. We're both late." He chuckled.
I groaned softly and nodded, opening the passenger door and sitting down. I held my pepper spray in my hand, a silent warning. I heard him chuckle softly and start driving. Inside of his car smelt so nice, it smelt woody and like rich vanilla.
"You're a professor? You don't look like it..." I mumble, my eyes widening slightly. "I didn't mean that in a bad way."
He chuckled and shook his head "I'm a creative writing professor, substituting for Mr. Lee. Zachary Everest. Lovely to meet you..?" He looked at me for a moment, his eyes darting over my face before looking back at the street, exhaling softly.
"Brooklyn. Brooklyn Elisa." I respond, I notice him look over at me with wide eyes before looking back at the road, biting his cheek softly. "I think you'll be my professor. Mr. Lee gives us English Lit."
"Yeah." He hummed, seeming lost in thought. I looked out the window to see we were already parked in the school parking lot. Making me inhale and open the door.
"Thank you, Mr. Everest. I'll see you around." I say politely before stepping out of the car and walking into the building. I noticed how he didn't leave his car for another few seconds after I got out. I went to my first class and sat down, counting the hours I had left before I could go home.
I just had to wait till August. Just till then and I'll be graduating and don't have to step foot in another classroom. Only an office.
Time ticked by and I found myself being a little excited for Mr. Everest's class. I packed up my things and made my way to his lecture hall. His class was packed, more than I expected to be in there. He had his back turned to the door, writing something on the whiteboard. I walked up the small steps and sat towards the back, taking out my iPad for notes.
