The wolves are lying dead all around me.Since yesterday that pack has been harassing me and it's taken me forever to track them down again. At last, they're gone. They were annoying the crap out of me.
I hear a whimper and at once am on guard. Is one of the wolves somehow still alive? I hear another and realize its not a wolf's whimper; it's too humane. A victim? I bite my lip. It sounds female, but I can't be too sure. That hardly means anything though. I've lost fights to women before.
"What's your name?" I ask. Hopefully she won't attack me. There's a reason the wolves were after her; she must be important somehow. They don't eat people, they prefer animals, I've discovered. There must be a reason they were chasing me. Knowing another victim might help me figure it out.
"Cadi..." she says, or stammers. My eyebrows crease together. She needs to trust me or I won't be able to get her to come with me.
Well, I'm all she's got. She's going to have to trust me. I still can't see her properly. Is she injured? The place I'm staying in isn't too far away from here, but if her leg's chewed off or something it could take a long time to get there.
"Are you hurt? Can you stand?" I ask.
"I'm fine," she replies. She still sounds scared, I notice. She takes a few steps. I hear her whimpering in the darkness, and roll my eyes. I'm not putting up with her wincing and whining all through the walk there, though I admire her persistence. I chuckle.
"When I said can you walk, I meant can you walk without hurting yourself." She starts to protest, but I pick her up easily. She's very light, and she feels like a stick in my arms. How long has it been since she last ate?
We don't talk much after that. When we finally arrive in the hut, I go to light a fire and turn to look at her. I'm shocked at what I see.
She's beautiful.
Her hair is dark blonde, and slightly curly, and her eyes are a soft grey blue. She is tiny, like I thought, but she has curves as well. I can make out her shape. Perhaps she's 5'5. A foot shorter than me, I think with amusement. She's still pretty, though.
I shake these thoughts from my head and look at her. "I'm Andres," I introduce myself. I notice that it looks like she has a little crush on me. Cute. I can work that to my advantage. I need her to stay with me - at least, for a short time.
"Like I said," she whispers, "Cadi."
"Like I said," I say, mocking her voice, "don't be scared of me, Cadi." She looks scared, but then she looks like she's been through some pretty tough times. I notice again that she looks as if she hasn't eaten, not in days. I light the stove. "Do you want something to eat?"
"N-no. I'm fine," she lies. I frown. Obviously she wants to eat, why the heck is she lying to me? I sigh, and shake my head. When I figured I should take her back with me to understand these wolves, I didn't realize she'd be so hard to understand.
"Come on, you're an absolute twig. You look like you haven't eaten in days," I encourage her, trying to coax her into eating.
Suddenly she looks incredibly disbelieving. Something clicks in my mind. Is she worried about her weight?
God, that's stupid. She has a near perfect figure, and her waist is tiny."Why are you looking so skeptical all of a sudden?" I snap.
"I - I'm not a twig." Now I'm mad. If she was any slimmer she'd literally just be a skeleton with blonde hair. I find myself lifting up her chin so I can see her properly.
"Do you really not see how slim you are?" I ask.
"I'm not slim!" I'm surprised to see that she raises her voice, but just as annoyed at her words. It's annoying as hell when people put themselves down.
"I want all of it finished," I tell her sternly. "No buts."
She groans, but I can tell she likes it and soon she's eating properly. Good. I frown, noticing how bedraggled her clothes are."Do you want something of mine to wear for the night? I can wash them for you," I suggest. She closes her eyes, and I realize for the first time that she must be exhausted.
"Are you tired?" I find myself coming closer to her. I find a clean t-shirt mine somewhere and hand it to her. "Here." She takes it with a smile.
"I - would you mind turning around?" she mumbles. She's gone bright red. I smirk, but do as she asks. She needs to like me after all. I take her clothes, noticing slightly sadly that she kept her underwear on.
"Go to sleep." I say firmly, pointing to the bed.
"Is - isn't this your bed?" she asks sleepily, but evidently she wants to get into the bed.
"I'll take the couch," I say gently, putting her on the bed. She's asleep almost as soon as she gets in.
I drop my lips on to her forehead. "Goodnight, Cadi."
I have no idea why I did it afterwards. It just felt right at the time.
*
She wakes up looking sleepy, but adorable in my big t-shirt. Suddenly I frown. I've been thinking a lot about her too fondly than I should be recently. This could affect everything.
I shouldn't love her.
I can't.
