AFTER WHATEVER THOSE monster things were, the group decided to walk back down the train track. And, after what Maggie probably deemed Steve's dumbest moment-which is a hard competition in her eyes, they followed a sound that lead them to the Hawkins Lab. Not only did they find themselves in front of the Hawkins Lab, they were with Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler-Steve's ex? Emphasis on the question mark.
The whole group was standing around the front gate to get into the lab after the power had just turned back on. Dustin was fighting Jonathan to open the gate and the button wasn't budging. Everyone else was standing in front of the closed gate. They all carried themselves with a bravery that Maggie wished she had. She was hiding behind Steve, she wanted to reach for his hand so she felt less lonely but he didn't seem to want that. He seemed too busy with wanting to fight whatever those monsters were.
When the gate finally opened, Jonathan ran into his car, calling for Nancy to join him. When Steve heard Nancy's name, he jumped up to go with him rather than her. But in a split second, Maggie's hand grabbed onto Steve's arm, wanting him to be close.
He didn't turn to face her, his look was stern as he watched his girlfriend get into the car with the Byers boy. And as much as he wanted to, he couldn't lift his feet, he couldn't move away from Maggie Hopper.
They watched as the car drove down the path to the lab. The middle schoolers were pacing around the road while Maggie and Steve kind of sat in silence not knowing what to say to each other, or if there was anything to say at all.
"Guys," Max broke the silence as she looked down the road to see what was coming.
Everyone else stepped in the middle of the road to see Jonathan's car followed by Hopper's Blazer. Jonathan honked his horn as the teens all ran out of the rode but before Maggie could think for herself, Steve's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her out of the road. Her legs flew into the air as he practically snatched her.
Maggie's Dad's Blazer stopped in front of the teens, Steve still refusing to drop Maggie to her feet. "Dad?" she asked.
"Let's go," was all he responded with.
Steve opened the door for everyone to pile in but as Maggie went to step into the truck, Steve pulled her back and sat down first. There was nothing Maggie wanted more than to slap the Harrington boy for the douchy move but before she could do anything, he grabbed her and sat her down on his lap.
"Okay, let's go!" Steve said as he wrapped his arms tightly around Maggie. Hopper drove off to the Byers.
MAGGIE KNEW SHE could offer nothing to the group that would benefit them. She sat with her knees in her chest on the couch. She was watching Will Byers as everyone else had these tasks to get the back shed ready to take whatever is in Will down...or something.
When her dad finally took Will to the shed, Steve joined Maggie in the living room. He began to practice his swinging what a bat covered in nails.
"I don't think that's a good golf club," Maggie said, still not moving from the position she sat in.
Without saying anything, Steve simply stopped swinging. "I'm not playing golf," he said as a matter of factly.
"Not with that form you're not," Maggie teased, this was the most she could offer. Something to lighten up the mood.
A small smile spread on Steve's lips as he stood up and looked at the girl.
The back door swung open. Loud footsteps entered the kitchen and when Maggie looked over, she saw her dad grabbing a pen and paper to write something down. A collection of dots and lines. Morse code.
As he wrote each collection of dots and dashes, Maggie said each letter out loud. "H," She began.
"E."
"R."
"E."
Steve looked at the girl, his eyes furrowed with confusion, "Morse code."
"Will's still here," Hopper said.
He conducted a plan, he would silently send out a signal between walkie-talkies and Maggie would translate it. Will was communicating through Morse Code. Like Maggie's Dad said, Will was still here.
As the signals came in, Maggie wrote them down. Maybe she did feel useful in this moment, but only because her dad made her learn Morse Code so it wasn't like she willingly helped, she was just the easiest resource for them right now. When they finally figured out what Will was saying, the paper Maggie wrote down said "Close Gate."
The phone started ringing, if whatever was possessing Will heard the phone ringing, it would know where they all were. Dustin ran over and took the phone off the wall and it stopped, moments later, it began ringing again and he did the same thing. Only this time, Nancy took the phone off the wall, fully. The entire phone was off the wall and on the floor now.
When Maggie's dad came back into the house with the others and Will, he instantly went to the living room. "Hey! Get away from the windows!" He told the kids.
Maggie followed after her dad, Steve right behind her. Without looking at her, Hopper called, "Maggie," and tossed the other gun he had to her. "Don't let me down, kid."
Jesus Christ, that doesn't make Maggie feel any better.
She silently loaded the gun, pointing it at the same window her father was. The monsters growled and circled the house as everyone faced the direction the sound was coming from. It sounded like the monster was getting closer every second but Maggie's finger never touched the trigger. Not until her dad told her to.
The screeching was getting closer and closer until it stopped. Was the monster playing games? Surely this faceless being didn't have a sense of humor like that. The monster came flying through the window, only the monster didn't look like it was trying to attack. It fell limp and was laying on the floor. It was honestly kind of sad, it looked kind of like a dead puppy.
Before Maggie could put any more depressing thoughts in her head about the murderous monsters, the lock to the front door began to turn.
Everyone turned in preparation to face whatever evil entity was behind the door but when it opened and it began to walk in, it was anything but.
"Is that-" Max began to ask.
"El," Maggie's voice broke as her sister instantly lunged to hug her. "God, I'm going to have to get you new clothes," the blonde laughed as she cradled her younger sister. El scoffed at Maggie's comment.
When the two girls separated, Maggie noticed someone else had caught El's attention.
How the hell did El know Mike? Why was he crying?
