As I finally shoved my body under the gate, it slammed shut the second I got my ankle through. My orange jumpsuit glistened in the rain. I turned back to him. Still behind that chain link fence. "Thank you! I'll come back for you I promise!" I yelled to my companion on the other side of the fence. His face was stone cold. He stood behind the fence, never touching it. He uttered one word. "Go." I stared at him. I was about to retaliate to convince him. But the slight smile that stretched his face slightly made me see I had no choice. I turned my back and took off. The guilt filled me like an active volcano. I wanted to cry, luckily the rain already ran down my face as I did so. That face. I'll never forget him. His face. Never.
