Weekends had always been long, boring, tiring and filled with frustration and cleaning up. It was almost the same at home but it was a bit more peaceful, since it had always been just myself and aunt Klein.
For the first time in weeks I didn't hear the sound of the bell. However, the screams I heard woke me up immediately. The girls were at the latter end of the room, quivering in fear, like they had seen a ghost. I sat up and traced their fearful looks to a cockroach in the center of the room.
I couldn't believe my eyes, the six girls were so scared of a mere cockroach. The cockroach seemed to have a broken leg as it didn't run when I got off my bed and moved towards it. I stepped on the cockroach and the girls gazes shifted from the dead cockroach to me ." What ? " I asked, wondering what was so interesting to look at on my face .
" Nothing" they replied.
The morning's clean up routine was done in a haste before our matron walked in to check
" Good morning girls "
" Good morning ma "
" I hope you all slept well ? "
" Yes ma "
" I can see you all did a good job cleaning up"
" Thank you ma "
" I hope you're preparing for your exams? "
" Yes ma "
" That's good, I hope you heard about the boy
who visited this hostel and got caught last
night? "" Yes ma, what class is he ? " Some of the girls asked
" He's in the 11th grade. Anyway it's a good
thing you've been well behaved so far and
so I must appreciate your cooperation.
however, I know that you would start
showcasing the traits of all 12th graders as
we progress. But then let's try to be less of
a pain in the ass, like the last outgone set of.
By the way Zoey, here's your phone. I'm
aware that everyone in this room and the
hostels for 12th graders have their phones
with them but you should try to moderate
the time you spend on it. And study so that
when you finish from here, you'll have the
best possible results okay ? "" Yes ma thank you ma "
" And I pray that the Lord will bless you all
and help you in everything you do "" Amen ma "
Our matron was nice at times, she was a mother to all of us and then sometimes she was a monster who we would run from. Especially if she got any bad report about us. But it was almost impossible to receive only good news about the 12th graders and I'm sure she knew that. 12th graders have always been a headache but for some reason we had been good girls so far . But I can't say the same about the boys.
We took our uniforms and beddings to the laundry men and women. The only things we washed ourselves, were our underwears and sport jerseys since we didn't have our name tags on them.
I received a call from my aunt. It had been almost two weeks since I last spoke to her.
" Good morning Aunt k "
" How're you sweetheart?"
"I'm doing fine though a lot has happened. I
got as assisting captain on our soccer team
some days ago. "" That's nice honey, congratulations "
" It's not nice aunt, I don't know a thing about
being captain but I'm getting a little help
from a guy named... I don't know his name "" A guy ?, that's interesting "
I sighed, I knew she was going to take it the wrong way
" Like I said, I don't know his name, which
... Is not right. But I never really bothered to
ask. "" I guess you haven't changed much "
" I don't understand aunt "
" Yeah I know, you'll understand later "
" Okay then I have to go and study now I have
two tests on Monday. "" Okay take care of yourself honey "
ugh, she just won't understand when I say that I can't.. get to "that" extent of closeness with a guy, she thought as she dropped the call.
I lay in bed, scribbling happily in my future until it was time for Math class. Walking alone with my small bag at my back and my future in my hands I felt fulfilled. I spotted the pavilion guy some meters ahead.
" Hey wait up " I yelled. He turned back with a smile on his face.
" You look beautiful with your hair let down"
" Thank you" I replied with a warm smile.
He kept staring at me and smiling and it felt really creepy.
" Erm.. what're you... Stop staring at me, its
creepy "" Oh I'm sorry, you just look really cute when
you're happy "" Really ?" I asked, as my cheeks flushed red
" And I haven't seen you blush before "
" Blush ? Oops ! "
I covered both my cheeks with my hands, feeling even more embarrassed. I excused myself and realized that I'd forgotten to ask for his name again." why did I go red simply because of a random
a compliment ?
and why did I stutter when he stared at me ?
It looks like I'm becoming a freak. Maybe it's
because I haven't spoken to Janet in a while "I called Janet after classes but she wasn't taking her calls, so I called Daniel
" Hey Dan "
"Sweetheart , it's been a while "
" Yeah, I've been trying to reach Janet but ... "
" Sorry love, my phone has issues but I'm
getting a new one tomorrow " Janet said." I've been acting weird lately "
" How ? "
" I stuttered when he stared at me, and I
flushed red when he said gave me a
compliment. it's unlike me "" You're changing "
" what ? how ? Why does everyone keep
saying that ? "" You won't understand. "
" Dan you think I'm changing too ? "
" Yeah I do "
I bumped into the annoying guy from AGM class. I noticed his name tag in his uniform
" Henry "
" Martina "
" You bumped into me you should apologize "
" No I shouldn't, you easily get carried away
that's not right for someone who is supposed
to be a girl "" Hey ! Why are you always picking on me ? "
" Because it's fun " He said coldly and went off
I spent some more time talking to Janet and Daniel and had to go back to the hostel to study. I ended the call with a promise to call back when I was done reading.
The rest of the weekend was the same as always boring and tiring. I went early to bed so I could wake up early for service the next day.I managed to get through Saturday, and when Sunday came, it was fast ... Or so I guessed, I continued my conversation with Janet about the pavilion guy, Henry who was always picking on me, and the the rest of it .
