AN: This one was a little hard to write because Soulmate was the start of the one shots and I didn't have it saved. I initially wrote it when I was mentally ready to leave a relationship even though I physically stayed for another year.

It's a little bitter sweet but I hope you enjoy

"But why can't you stay here with me?" Stephanie asks with a pout. I just tucked her in the bed after she had a hard day of treatments.

I met her the first day of volunteering at St. Joseph and she was the rudest six year old I've ever met. I understand that most children would hate spending their childhood in a hospital but most of the kids are grateful for any outside attention.

Stephanie told me about myself

About how most people volunteer to feel better about themselves rather than actually doing some good for others.

She refused to gain any attachment just for another person to leave her

Hard life for just a baby and I can't fault her

She reminded me of myself and overtime we've grown closer. She's like my little sister.

"I'm not ya parent so I'm not allowed to. Aren't they coming?"

"I don't know"

She shrugs her shoulders and pout

A hurricane is set to come through. Nothing TOO serious but Stephanie wants company. I've already brought her favorite foods, snacks and games to keep her occupied. Even updated her iPad with a battery pack just in case.

She likes to stay connected to me. Especially since her parents are ...unpredictable

"Well don't worry about it. You'll be too distracted losing in paintball anyway"

"You never beat me"

"Nah. I just like to let you win"

I tickle Stephanie as a way to cheer her up when we hear a knock on the door. We turn to see the finest, THE FINEST, surgeon in this hospital.

"How are you ladies?"

"How are you ladies?"

Gawd. I wanna eat his voice

I have no idea how to explain what I mean but I feel like someone knows what I mean.

"We're ok Dr. Lahela. I mean Mr. Bryce." Stephanie blushes as she responds.

Me? My voice gets stuck in my throat because every time he looks at me, I turn into a slip and slide

"Good to hear. I just want to make sure you are settled before I leave for tonight."

"Thank you as always"
