I lean back against the headrest as the car continues to bump against the gravel road. It's the first time I've been out since my divorce and my twins, Cree and Axel, decided to make it a boys weekend.

We spent the first night out in the city. Strip clubs and casinos just to let loose. Won a good chunk of change and gave the strippers about an eighth of it.

Now we're driving a little further out to camp for the rest of the weekend. Being in nature is the perfect way to bring our kind peace.

Like settling back into our roots

"How long until we get to the trail? I said I was hungry an hour ago." Cree groans from the backseat. Axel looks at him through the rear view but my stomach rumbles, interrupting the moment.

"You too, Dad?"

Axel arches a brow my way and I shrug. It has been a few hours since we last ate. We each had our own pizza but Axel should've known that wouldn't have held us for long.

Luckily we pass a sign that says a diner is at the next exit. Axel merges with Cree pumping his fist in celebration.

With a howl, we pull up to the diner/ bar. A quaint little building that looks like it's been around for at least a hundred years. Not run down but not modern either.

Somewhat homey

As we enter, I'm hit by the most magnificent smell to ever exist. It's not the food, although it does smell great. No, this smell is consuming my whole body. I can feel my wolf attempting to claw at the surface.

My senses take over as I feel time stop. I close my eyes and feel the cool air against my skin. The prickle from the goosebumps, my canines descending, my claws elongating.

I take a deep breath through my nose to stop and reverse my transformation. My body goes back to normal and I open my eyes to see a petite, redhead coming our way.

"Table for three?" She asks in a slight country accent.

"Do you have a booth available?" Cree asks. The woman looks at a layout and then nods.

"Follow me."

We're led to the right, towards a corner booth which I don't mind. It's good to never have your back facing the room. You never know when there could be a threat.

The boys and I slide into the booth and menus are placed in front of us before the redhead walks off.

"Dad"

I look up to see the twins, staring

"What?"

"What happened to you when we walked in?" Axel inquires.

"Yeah, I thought you were about to go full beast. You know I can't fight on an empty stomach."

Cree shakes his head and picks up the menu. Axel rolls his eyes but they both look my way again.
