Grayson
"Grayson."
Even in a coma, he jumped like he was awake. Someone had called his name. And it wasn't just anyone. A voice he would recognize anywhere.
Tobias Hawthorne: his grandfather. The old man.
Turning around he saw the old man standing there next to him. They were in his office, (Now Avery's) as Grayson had stood there. Just like when he was younger.
"Grandfather." He said starring at him. The old man was dead, but now, with him standing beside him it didn't feel like he was. Or maybe Grayson was dead and this was them reuniting in their ghost selves.
"What are you doing?"
"What do you mean?"
"What you doing?" he repeated. "Running away?"
"No." he said confused. "I'm here just like you wanted me to."
"I didn't call you. You called me."
"No, I didn't."
The old man gave him a look that made Grayson stop. What was going on? Why was the old man here? Had he really called him? He couldn't remember anything after hearing that conversation from afar.
"What are you son?" The old man's tone was warm, almost friendly. "You've been on a rollercoaster since you stepped into this journey."
"What journey?" He asked exasperated. "I don't know what's going on! I'm here and then I'm there. What is going on?! I can't take it anymore!"
The old man gently took him by his shoulders and led him to the armchairs. Together they sat down.
"You are on a journey of who you are going to be. I've been watching you, and I'd say you know deep down who you are going to be. And I can honestly say you have turned out better then I ever imagined."
He had to ask. "How did you imagine me being?"
The old man didn't mince words. He never did. "I pictured you a lot like me."
Grayson wasn't sure if he liked that.
"Thankfully I was proven wrong." he continued. "You are way better than I ever was."
Grayson almost smiled. Almost.
"But enough of that. We are talking about why you are here. Do you remember how to got here?"
"I fell asleep and then you appeared."
"No. I mean before this all happened. The dreams. The memories. The confusion. The questions. What were you doing before all this happened? Think."
Grayson did. It was hard, but as really thought about it he began to slowly remember what led him to this position. "I was at the Hawthorne Foundation."
Tobias nodded. "And why had you gone there? It was Saturday. You don't usually work on a Saturday."
He was right. He usually. So why was he there?
"I needed to get away." he said after a moments thought. "I needed a distraction."
"From what?"
"I don't know." he said. "I can't remember."
Grayson watched as the old man got up from his chair. He followed suit. "Where are you going?"
"Correction. It's we not you. And we are going to go back to that day. But before we do I need to show you something. Come here."
Grayson obeyed.
The old man pointed to a large mirror. "Look at it."
Grayson did and was shocked at what he saw: Himself lying in his bed. Tubes, wires, and other medical equipment was hooked up all over his body. He stared in horror as he saw all his family standing beside him. "Did I die?"
"No. But that's how you are right now. Barely hanging on. I'm going to show you how you got to that place. And then you are going to decide to fight to live or come with me."
Grayson saw what he meant. He would die.
Glancing one time back at the image, he was whisked away.
His fate unknown.
