Chapter Thirteen
I woke up by the sound of my ringtone. I looked at the alarm clock. It was 4.27am. ‘Who the hell calls someone at 4.27am?’, I thought. I looked next to me. Harry was still sleeping. I quickly grabbed my phone of the bedside table. “Hello?”, I said with a sleepy voice. “Hello, ma’am, are you Jade Winter?”, the man said. “Ehm, yeah…” Who was this? “I’m from the police”, the man said. ‘The police? What happened?’, I thought. “I’m sorry, but I have some very bad news…”, he said and he waited a few seconds. “I have to inform you that your parents, Kyle and Celine Winter, had been murdered at 2 o’clock this night… I’m sorry for your loss..” I felt my knees get weak. This couldn’t be true. This had to be a nightmare. Then Harry came in. “Jade? What’s wrong? Why are you up this early?”, he asked. I looked at him. Then I realised it wasn’t a dream. This was real. I felt the telephone slip out of my hand. “Jade?!”, Harry yelled and he ran to me. My knees failed and then everything went black.
“Jade? Jade wake up”, someone said. I slowly opened my eyes. I was laying in Harry’s bed, and Harry was sitting on the edge of the bed. He was holding my hand. “Jade, are you okay?”, he asked. I wanted to nod, but then I remembered the phone call. I felt my eyes get watery. I looked at Harry. His eyes were red from crying. “Jade.. I-I’m sorry, this is all my fault…”, he whispered. I grabbed his other hand and looked him in the eyes. “No Harry, it is not your fault”, I managed to whisper. “Yes, it is…”, he said. He took a deep breath. “They found something at your parents house..”, he said. He handed me his phone. It showed a picture of a small piece of paper. My eyes were still watery, so I blinked a few times so that I could see what was written on the paper. I told you you were gonna pay for it, Styles. Be careful, this time it will only be her parents, but the next time it will be her. No name, just these two sentences. I looked back at Harry. Tears were falling down his cheeks again. “Harry, it’s NOT your fault…”, I said again. No reaction. Then he began to speak. “I… Jade, I already lost everyone I loved, and I don’t wanna lose you too…”, he said. I sat up. “Harry what do you mean you already lost everyone you loved?”, I asked. I didn’t understand. Harry didn’t say anything. “Harry look at me”, I said. He looked up. “What do you mean”, I asked again. “I was fourteen…”, he said. “My parents and my sister wanted to go to the beach, but I didn’t. I wanted to hang out with some friends. Then they got mad at me and they said they would go alone. So they went to the beach and I went to my friends.” He stopped for a few seconds. “Then, a few hours later, my uncle called me. He said he was on his way to my friend’s house to pick me up ‘cause something bad happened. So a few minutes later he arrived and said we had to go to the hospital. I could see he had cried, his eyes were red. I asked what happened..” Harry stopped again. “What happened?”, I asked. “He told me that my parents had had a car accident… My father was still alive, but my mom and sister…” Harry’s eyes got watery again. He took a deep breath and continued in a trembling voice. “My mom and sister had died a few minutes after the accident…” I squeezed his hands. “So my uncle and I went to the hospital. I was quite shocked when I saw my father. He had bruises all over his face and a few machines were keeping him alive. A few days later we got a call from the hospital. My father had passed away. I didn’t go to the funeral, because I felt guilty..” “But it wasn’t your fault Harry, you know that..”, I whispered. “From the day they died ‘till now, I’ve always had the feeling it was my fault Jade, because if I went with them, it maybe hadn’t happened… And that’s why I feel guilty now… Because if we hadn’t met eachother, if I hadn’t asked you to have a drink with me, if I hadn’t fallen in love with you, this wouldn’t have happened…” “Oh Harry, don’t think like that”, I said and I hugged him. He hugged me back and nuzzled his face in my hair. “I love you Jade, I don’t wanna lose you”, he said. “I love you too Harry, and you won’t lose me…” I waited a minute. “Harry?” “Hmm” He still had his arms wrapped around me. “I wanna see my parents”, I said.
