Chapter Fourteen
“I love you Jade, I don’t wanna lose you”, he said. “I love you too Harry, and you won’t lose me…” I waited a minute. “Harry?” “Hmm” He still had his arms wrapped around me. “I wanna see my parents”, I said. Harry gently pulled me away and looked me in the eyes. “Are you sure?”, he asked. I nodded. “Okay…”, he said and he got up from the bed. “What are you gonna do?”, I asked. “Calling the funeral parlour”, he said and he walked out of the room. I got up and walked into the bathroom to take a quick shower.
I walked downstairs. Harry had made us a few sandwiches. “We can go see your parents at 3 o’clock”, Harry said and he sat down on the couch. I didn’t say anything and sat down next to him. We silently ate our sandwiches. “Jade, if you don’t want to go, you-”, Harry said, but I cut him off. “I want to go Harry, I mean, they’re my parents…” He nodded. “Do you know when the funeral is?”, I asked, half-whispering. “On wednesday”, he answered without any expression on his face. We finished our breakfast. “Do you want to go somewhere, just to think about something else?”, Harry asked while he put our plates in the dishwasher. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. It still felt like it was a terrible nightmare, but I knew it wasn’t. Then I realised I hadn’t seen Sophie, Alexis and Owen for ages. “I’d like to go to my friends…”, I said to Harry. He nodded. “That’s okay. I can give you a ride if you want..”, he said. “Oh no no no, you’re coming with me, I want you to meet them”, I said. He looked away. “Ehm.. Are you sure? I mean, I am the guy who.. Ehm..”, he stuttered. “Harry, they won’t see you as the guy who dealed drugs and caused the… The murder…”, I said, whispering the last two words. “Okay, then I’ll come with you”, he said. “Good..”, I said and looked at the clock on the wall. 10.12am. So we still had five hours left. “I’ll call them”, I said and I grabbed my phone to call Sophie, Alexis and Owen.
We arrived at Owen’s house. Harry and I got out of the car and walked towards the front door. As soon as I rang the bell, the door swung open and Owen hugged me tight. “Thank God you’re safe..”, he whispered. I just nodded. “And then you must be Harry”, he said while looking at Harry. He shook Harry’s hand. “I’m Owen” “Nice to meet you Owen, I’m Harry”, Harry said. “Come in”, Owen said. Harry and I walked into the house and Owen closed the front door behind him. We walked into the living room. I immediately got hugged by Alexis and Sophie. “Omg we were so worried about you when we heard what happened”, Alexis said. I could see she and Sophie had cried. “I’m okay”, I said and I tried to smile, but I failed. “I’m gonna get us some drinks”, Sophie said and she walked towards the kitchen. After a few minutes she came back, Harry introduced himself and we sat down. “How are you now?”, Sophie asked with a soft voice, as if she was afraid to ask me that. “I-I’m okay..”, I lied. I wasn’t okay. I felt terrible. And then I couldn’t hold my tears anymore. I started to cry. Harry pulled me close and hugged me. “Shh, it’s okay, we’re here for you”, he whispered. After ten minutes my tears were used up. I wiped them away. “I’m sorry…”, I whispered. “No, don’t be, it’s not your fault..”, Alexis said. I nodded.
We had watched a movie and talked a lot, so I actually forgot about the situation. Untill I looked at the clock. 2.43pm. “Harry, we have to go…”, I said, interrupting his and Owen’s conversation. They got along very well and had talked a lot. “Ehm, yeah…”, he said and he got up. Alexis, Owen and Sophie hugged me. “We’ll be there with you.. On wednesday”, Alexis said. “Thanks, I love you”, I said. And with that Harry and I left.
We arrived at the funeral parlour. Suddenly I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do this anymore. We got out of the car and walked inside the small building. A woman was sitting behind a desk. She didn’t recognise us, so Harry cleared his throat. The woman looked up. “Hello, how can I help you?”, she asked. “Ehm… We’re here for Celine and Kyle Winter…”, Harry said. “I see.. Follow me”, the woman said. She got up and we followed her. She stopped at a big grey door. “You have to know, we aren’t allowed to let people be with the deceased, but because this was very unexpected for you, we made an exeption for you”, she said to me. I just nodded. She opened the door and let us in. There they were. My parents. They were laying in two beds (they were very similar to hospital beds), and they were wearing clean clothes. It looked like they were just sleeping, like they could wake up every moment, but I knew they couldn’t. I felt a tear escaping my eye and rolling down my cheek. Harry grabbed my hand. I leaned my head against his chest and cried. After 40 minutes of crying, watching my parents and holding their hands, Harry touched my shoulder. “I think we should go..”, he whispered. I nodded and got up, a little dizzy from all the crying. He put his arm around my waist and we walked back to the hallway. The woman was already waiting for us. “If you want to change something about the clothes or hairstyles for the funeral, you just have to say, then I’ll change it”, she said to me. “No, it’s perfect”, I managed to say. She smiled at me. “Okay, then I wish both of you all the best”, she said. “Thanks”, Harry said, and we walked outside. We got into the car and went back to my house. “Are you sure it was a good idea to do that?”, Harry asked. I nodded. “Yes, I just needed to see them…”, I said. The rest of the ride was silent. We arrived at my house. Harry wanted to get out, but I stopped him. “What’s wrong?”, he asked. “I just want to be alone..”, I said. “Oh okay”, Harry said. I kissed him on the cheek and got out of the car. I walked towards the front door and turned around to wave at Harry before going in.
