The next day, Katie was preparing for work, slipping into her green paramedic uniform. She tied her hair into a high ponytail, the strawberry-blonde locks bouncing as she fastened her black belt.

As she walked downstairs, she found Lapis engrossed in a book. "Are you heading out already?" Lapis asked. "Yep, it's going to be a long day," Katie replied as she laced up her combat boots.

After getting ready, she approached Lapis, taking the book from their hands.

With a gentle kiss on the lips, she whispered, "I'll hopefully be back tonight or tomorrow morning," before grabbing her jacket and heading out.

Hours later, and Katie was still on shift around 4pm. She had a call from 999, the emergency number. Veronica, her co-worker, looked at Katie. Katie's heart sank as Veronica shared the address that matched her own. Panic surged through her veins as she realised it was their shared home with Lapis. "Oh no, that's our address," Katie muttered, her mind racing with worry for Lapis.

Veronica's words hit Katie like a ton of bricks.

The mention of a 22-year-old autistic individual having a meltdown at their address sent shivers down her spine. Without a moment's hesitation, Katie's thoughts immediately turned to Lapis, her beloved spouse.

As she excused herself from work, Katie's mind was consumed with concern for Lapis. She rushed out of the workplace, her heart heavy with fear and anticipation. The drive back home felt like an eternity, each passing second filled with worry for her partner.

Finally arriving at South Gipsy Road, Katie's hands trembled as she unlocked the door and stepped inside. The scene that greeted her was both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

Lapis sat on the floor, visibly drained from the meltdown, but their eyes lit up at the sight of Katie.

Without a word, Katie knelt beside Lapis, offering a comforting embrace. She brought Lapis into her arms, gently rocking them. "Shh, I'm here now. Why didn't you call me?" she asked softly, her tone filled with care.

Lapis, still trembling, managed to stammer out, "Couldn't risk it while you were at work." They held onto Katie tightly, seeking comfort in her embrace. "I've got you. It's okay," Katie reassured, refusing to let go of Lapis, offering them the support they needed in that moment.

With Lapis resting their head on her chest, tears staining her Paramedic uniform, Katie didn't mind at all. She guided Lapis to the sofa, wrapping an arm around them, providing a safe place for them to lean on her.

As they sat together, the silence between them spoke volumes, conveying a sense of understanding and unconditional love. Katie's presence was a soothing balm for Lapis, easing their distress and bringing a sense of peace to their troubled heart.

As the hours passed, Katie and Lapis found themselves at home after a particularly emotional call. Lapis, who was on the autism spectrum, had a meltdown earlier and now found solace in the comfort of Katie's presence.

Lapis, exhausted and drained, had fallen asleep on the sofa with Katie by their side. Sensing the need for rest, Katie gently lifted Lapis and laid them down comfortably. Sitting beside them.

Katie ran her fingers through Lapis' pinkish-purple hair, a soothing gesture that brought a smile to Lapis' face. "Just rest, love. I've been given permission to take the rest of the evening off," Katie whispered softly, her voice filled with tenderness. Lapis, feeling safe and cared for, nodded in agreement.

With a comforting touch, Katie got up to change out of her green paramedic uniform and into her cosy pyjamas, ready to spend the evening taking care of Lapis and making sure they felt loved and supported.
