Three years had passed since Katie had graduated from college and completed level 3 of Public Services. As she walked down her street, she reached her house and fumbled with her keys to unlock the front door. Stepping inside, she noticed that the lights were off and the house was quiet.
Calling out for her parents, she received no response. With a shaky breath, she closed the front door behind her and kicked off her converse shoes before hanging up her leather jacket.
As the doorbell rang, Katie made her way to the door and opened it. On the doormat, she found a bouquet of red roses from her partner, Lapis. Smiling, she picked them up and whispered to herself, "Oh, you." Carrying the roses into the kitchen, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the thoughtful gesture.
After sorting the roses and placing them in a vase, Katie smiled as she leaned against the fridge, taking in the sweet scent of the flowers. Lost in the moment, she heard the doorbell ring once again.
With a skip in her step, she made her way to the door and opened it to find her partner, Lapis standing there. "Hey beautiful, did you get the roses?" Lapis asked with a warm smile. "I did, my love. They're beautiful, thank you," Katie replied, her eyes sparkling with gratitude. Lapis stepped inside the house, bringing a hand to cup Katie's face before leaning in to press a soft kiss to her lips.
The embrace filled Katie with warmth, and she wrapped her arms around Lapis, cherishing the love and comfort they shared in that moment. With Lapis by her side, Katie felt like she was truly home.
Katie pulled back from the kiss and rested her forehead against Lapis', brushing their noses together before leaning in for another soft kiss. After a moment of lingering closeness, Katie gently pulled away and walked into the kitchen, settling on the sofa.
Lapis soon joined her, sitting beside his girlfriend. "How's college been?" Lapis asked, breaking the silence. "It's been a good year, but I've finished now." She started, clearing her throat, knowing how Lapis may react to what she was going to say next.
Katie continued, taking a deep breath first, "I'm planning on going to University. I've applied, but I'm waiting for my exam grades before updating my UCAS application," Katie explained. "U-University?" Lapis stammered, taken aback by the news. "I'm sorry," Katie apologised, sensing his unease. "No, it's fine. Where are you thinking of going?" Lapis inquired, curious about his girlfriend's future plans. "I've applied to the University of Portsmouth," Katie replied.
She knew of the potential challenges they might face as a long-distance couple if she got accepted. "Long distance?..." Lapis quietly asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "I know it'll be hard, but we'll make it work," Katie reassured him, determination in her tone. Lapis nodded, understanding the situation and reached over to pull her into his arms, holding her close.
Katie laid her head on Lapis' chest and looked up at him with a small smile. "Even though I might have to go to University and if we end up working out as a long-distance couple, it's okay," she explained.
Lapis ran his fingers through her hair, a mix of emotions flickering in their eyes. "Okay," Lapis said quietly, his voice filled with unspoken emotions. "I guess it'll have to be that way... if you do get into University," they added, feeling a tear slip down their face. Katie gently wiped it away with her hand, offering them comfort. "It's okay. If I don't get into University, I'll be staying right here with you," Katie said reassuringly.
Lapis took a deep breath, their heart feeling heavy with the weight of their uncertain future. "If you do... I want to ask you something," Lapis started, their voice tentative. "Okay?" Katie asked, curiosity piqued. "How would you feel... if you didn't get into Uni... would you like to move in with me?" Lapis asked, offering her a piece of his heart.
