"Lily!" Cordelia called, jolting me awake from where I had apparently been asleep on the office floor.

"Huh?"

"Hi! Someone named Marzipan called. She wants you back at the store,"

I sat up slowly, gazing around me.

"Marzipan? What time is it?" I asked, still half asleep.

"Um...seven am," she replied, checking the clock.

"Ugh," I groaned, standing. "Tell Marian I'll be about an hour. Where's Kingsley?"

"You mean Emiel? He's talking to Angel in the office,"

I nodded, walking over to the door of the office and knocking.

"Come in," Angel called.

"Hi. Um, the owner of the store wants me to guard there today. I'll call her back for the details but do you mind if I head off soon?"

He looked back at me, slightly amused.

"I'm not your boss, do whatever you want,"

"But," Kingsley spoke and I raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, I know there's a but coming. You might not work here, Carpenter, but he sure wants you to,"

I rolled my eyes.

"But," Angel continued, smiling still. "Come back here after your shift's finished,"

I nodded, trying to ignore Kingsley and his comments.

"Sure. Do you need the others to come with me?" I asked.

"No, they'll be fine here," he replied.

"Good," I spoke with a pointed look at Kingsley.

"Its daytime you dimwit," he spoke, laughing.

I glared back.

"I know,"

"Maybe you're the murderer," he spat and I rolled my eyes.

"There's a reason why you aren't the detective,"

"And you are?"

"Smarter than you,"

He laughed again.

"You sound like a six-year-old,"

"You sound like an idiot,"

Angel cleared his throat, looking between the two of us, bemused.

"See ya," I spoke, leaving the office.

"I'll be back later," I told Cordelia and Wesley who were standing in the kitchen.

"Where are you going?" Wesley asked.

"Back to my apartment to get dressed and then to guard the shop. Just in case,"

"Oh. Well, good luck," he said.

"Thanks,"

"Don't die!" Cordelia called after me and I stifled laughter.

"I'll try not to!" I called back, leaving the office building.

Yeah, I though to myself.

Don't die.

...

I stood awkwardly outside the store for a few hours, feeling like an actual security guard for once in my life.

I was wearing the bulletproof vest that was usually hidden beneath my regular clothes and navy pants that I had only ever worn once before.

I looked more like a ten-year-old dressing up as a cop than your typical security guard but we digress.

The walkie talkie in my pocket crackled and I raised it to my ear, unaware it was even on.

"Hello?"

"Hi,"

"Who're you?" I asked, totally confused.

There was laughter and I frowned.

"Kingsley?"

"Took you long enough,"

I growled, switching the thing off.

I couldn't stand him with my whole heart.

Not once in my 23 years of living had I ever hated somebody as much as I hated him.

So why was I so obsessed with the thought of him?

"Ugh!" I cried aloud, earning me some strange looks from pedestrians.

Right, I thought, embarrassed.

This really wasn't my main character moment was it?

The next few hours passed and I circled the shop until the sun drifted behind the clouds.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, although it hadn't on the days Emmeline and Andrew were killed either.

"I'm going. Don't kill anyone while I'm not here to kill you," I spoke to nobody in particular as I turned to leave, though I kept my voice quiet this time so as to not draw anymore unnecessary attention to myself.

It grew dark quickly and I hurried back towards where my car had been parked outside of the apartment.

I didn't want to be hanging around much longer, despite how hard I fought to make myself look tough.

Which I was.

God!

Stupid Kingsley, and his need to make me doubt myself.

The office was dimly lit as I entered and I fumbled around the room to find the light switch.

"Hello?" I called.

"Hey,"

I screamed, raising my gun as I whipped around to face what was behind me.

Kingsley.

What a surprise.

"God I hate you!" I cried and he laughed as if my genuine terror was the best thing he had seen all day.

Monster, I thought sourly.

Turning the light on, he grinned, leading me downstairs towards the sound of Cordelia's voice.

"Hey!" she called. "Did you hear the screaming?"

Glaring back at Kingsley I nodded.

"Yeah. That was me,"

"Are you okay?" Wesley asked, glancing up from the books he was reading.

"Oh yeah. My favourite thing in the world is being jumpscared by a seven foot vampire," I grumbled and Kingsley grinned.

"Thanks but um, I'm only 5"8," he told me and I glared at him once again.

"Glad everyone's okay," Angel spoke, greeting me with a nod.

"I'm sure you are. Why's he still here anyway?"

"Good question," Cordelia muttered as Kingsley sat down on the small sofa.

"He wants to interrogate me," he spoke, though there was a note of playfulness in his voice.

"Are you never serious? People are being murdered out there ya know," I spoke and Kingsley shrugged.

"Why aren't you out there stopping them Carpenter?"

If only I knew what I was meant to be stopping.
