Ch. 13: Crossroads of the Heart
Days bled into a whirlwind of activity. Ethan, determined to make the most of his remaining time, whisked Ria away on a whirlwind tour of the city. They explored hidden cafes, visited art galleries that sent shivers down Ria's spine, and laughed until their sides ached. Ethan, ever the charmer, regaled her with tales of his life in Canada, his dreams for the future, and his unwavering support for her artistic aspirations.
Kai, however, seemed to have become a distant memory. Practice schedules clashed with Ria's outings with Ethan, and phone calls, once filled with stolen moments and shy confessions, became infrequent and strained. A pang of guilt pricked at Ria's conscience, but Ethan's infectious enthusiasm and the urgency of his impending departure pushed those feelings aside.
One evening, as they sat nestled in a cozy bookstore, a book of classic paintings open on their laps, Ethan turned to Ria, his gaze serious. "Ria," he began, his voice laced with a hint of nervousness, "there's something I need to tell you."
Ria met his gaze, her heart skipping a beat. "What is it, Ethan?" she asked, a knot of apprehension tightening in her stomach.
Ethan took a deep breath. "Remember how I told you I wouldn't kidnap you to Canada?" he said, a wry smile playing on his lips. "Well, maybe not literally kidnap you, but..." he hesitated, his voice dropping to a whisper, "what if I asked you to come with me?"
Ria's breath hitched. The very notion, just weeks ago, would have been unthinkable. But as she looked into Ethan's hopeful eyes, a kaleidoscope of emotions swirled within her. The thought of a fresh start, of pursuing her artistic dreams in a new city with her best friend, was undeniably appealing.
"Ethan," she began, her voice barely a whisper, "that's a lot to take in."
He reached out, taking her hand in his. "I know," he said, his voice gentle. "But think about it, Ria. Imagine all the art galleries we could visit, the inspiration we could find. We could even open a studio together, share our passion with the world."
Ria's mind raced. A life with Ethan, a life filled with art and creativity, seemed like a dream come true. But a nagging voice at the back of her mind whispered of unanswered questions and unexplored feelings.
"What about Kai?" she blurted out, the words tumbling from her lips before she could stop them.
Ethan's smile faltered slightly. "Kai," he repeated, a hint of bitterness creeping into his voice. "He barely seems to notice you're gone, Ria. Don't you see? This is your chance to follow your dreams, to be with someone who truly appreciates you."
The decision, once again, rested on Ria's shoulders. Ethan, his hopeful gaze locked on hers, awaited her answer. But this time, Ria knew she couldn't make a choice based on comfort or convenience. She needed to face her feelings, to be honest with both herself and the two boys who cared about her.
Taking a deep breath, Ria squeezed Ethan's hand, her voice filled with a newfound resolve. "Ethan," she said, her gaze meeting his, "I can't give you an answer right now. I need some time... to think, to sort things out in my head."
Disappointment flickered across Ethan's face, but he nodded in understanding. "Of course," he said, his voice tight. "Just... promise me you'll think about it. About us, about your dreams."
Ria squeezed his hand back, a silent apology hanging in the air. She knew her indecision hurt him, but the truth was, her heart was caught in a tug-of-war, and the only way to break free was to confront her emotions head-on. With a final, lingering glance at Ethan, Ria grabbed her bag and hurried out of the bookstore, the weight of her decision, and the unknown that awaited her at the park, heavy on her heart.
The park, once a haven for stolen kisses and whispered secrets, felt charged with a different kind of energy as Ria hurried towards the familiar bench. Kai sat there, his head buried in his hands, his broad shoulders slumped in defeat. His posture spoke volumes, even before Ria reached him.
"Kai?" she called out softly, her voice barely a whisper.
He looked up, his face a mask of dejection. But when his eyes met hers, a flicker of something akin to hope ignited within them. He stood up slowly, his gaze lingering on her transformed appearance for a beat before meeting her eyes again.
"Ria," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "There you are. I... I needed to see you."
Ria's heart ached for him. The guilt that had been gnawing at her intensified. "Ethan told me you wanted to talk," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Is everything okay?"
Kai shook his head, his jaw clenching tight. He hesitated for a moment, then blurted out, "The truth is, Ria, these past few days... well, they've been torture."
Ria's breath hitched. "Torture?" she echoed, a flicker of hope blooming in her chest. Did that mean...?
"Seeing you with Ethan all the time..." Kai continued, his voice low and strained. "It made me realize... how much I... how much I actually care about you."
The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions. Ria's heart pounded in her chest, a drum solo against the backdrop of the rustling leaves. This was it. The moment of truth.
"But you never said anything," she stammered, her voice filled with a mixture of relief and confusion.
Kai raked a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. "I was scared, Ria. Scared of rejection, scared of messing things up with the team."
His words resonated with Ria. She understood his fear, the fear of stepping outside his comfort zone, the fear of putting his heart on the line. But a new voice, stronger than ever before, urged her to speak her truth.
"Kai," she began, her voice filled with a newfound confidence, "I... I care about you too. A lot." Her cheeks burned as she confessed her feelings, but the weight of unspoken words lifted from her shoulders.
A smile, slow and genuine, spread across Kai's face. Relief and joy battled for dominance in his eyes. "You do?" he breathed, his voice filled with wonder.
Ria nodded, unable to tear her gaze away from him. "But..." she hesitated, her voice dropping to a whisper, "there's Ethan."
Kai's smile faltered slightly. "Ethan," he repeated, a hint of bitterness creeping into his voice. "He's leaving for Canada, Ria. Is that what you truly want? A long-distance relationship based on childhood memories?"
Ria's brow furrowed. Ethan's offer, the prospect of a new life in Canada, suddenly seemed less appealing in the face of Kai's raw honesty, his vulnerability. The truth was, her heart belonged here, not across the border.
"No," she admitted, shaking her head. "That's not what I want."
A triumphant grin lit up Kai's face. He reached out, his hand hovering over hers. Just as he was about to close the distance, a loud, boisterous voice shattered the tender moment.
"Ria! There you are!"
Ethan emerged from the trees, a camera dangling around his neck. His smile faltered slightly as he saw Kai standing beside Ria, their hands almost touching. The unspoken confession hung heavy in the air.
For a moment, an awkward silence stretched between them, a silent triangle of emotions. Ria knew then that the easy camaraderie with Ethan, the comfortable friendship, would never be the same. But as she looked into Kai's hopeful eyes, a new chapter, filled with the promise of love, honesty, and shared dreams, beckoned.
Taking a deep breath, Ria stepped forward, her gaze fixed on Kai. "Ethan," she began, her voice filled with newfound resolve, "thank you for reminding me of the importance of friendship, and for helping me see what was right in front of me all along."
Ethan's smile faltered, but a flicker of understanding replaced the initial disappointment. He nodded slowly, his gaze shifting to Kai. "Looks like you got yourself a keeper, Kai," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness.
