I parked my car on the sandy lot, the familiar sound of crashing waves immediately began to wash away some of my tension. The sun blazed overhead, casting a warm golden glow across the beach, as i stepped out a can feel the salty breeze tousled my hair.
I spotted Logan in his swimsuit, waiting for me with his surfboard under his arm, his grin is wide and inviting, and i couldn't help but feel a flicker of relief.
"OH! look who finally decided to join me!" he called, his voice filled with playful energy.
"Traffic," i replied, rolling my eyes as i smile crept onto my face, "you know how it is." i lied, he definitely knew that there isn't any traffic around the Outer Banks.
Logan chuckled as we started unloading the boards. I could feel the weight of my father's impending wedding to Caroline on my shoulders, the way it felt like my world was shifting beneath me. The joy of being at the beach was there.
"Ready to hit the waves?" Logan asked, breaking into my thoughts as i take off my jeans shorts and leave them on the sandy ground.
"Absolutely, i need this" i said, my frustration bubbling just beneath the surface, "it's been quite a stressed morning" i then added.
He nodded, sensing my mood to not talk about it. Yet, "Surfing always help with that. Just you, me and the ocean baby" he winks at me making me chuckle a little.
As we waded into the cool water, i climbed onto my board, looking out at the horizon. I really missed this, i hated spring. The waves looked inviting, and i could almost feel the nerves start to disappear with each water splash.
"Let's catch some waves!" Logan suggested, his enthusiasm is contagious, "Race you to that sandbar" he then yelled.
I couldn't help but laugh, the excitement breaking through my frustration, "You're on!" i yelled back still laughing out loud.
With that, we both paddled hard, the water splashing around us as i tried to keep up with Logan's long strokes. He's very good at surfing.
He glanced back, a playful smirk on his face, " Oh come on Riri, i thought you were better than this, show me what you got" i look at him, "Shut up!" i shot back, laughing as i pushed myself harder this time.
As i finally caught my first wave, a rush of adrenaline surged through me. It was exhilarating, the salt water spraying my face and all of the weight on my shoulders falling away immediately.
We rode wave after wave, the competition fueling our energy. After a few rounds of laugher and playful shoving, i felt lighter, the chaos of my life is now gone, at least for now.
Eventually, we drifted back, sitting on our board in the calm water, the waves gently rocking us. I took a deep breath, feeling the sun warm my skin.
"This was definitely what i needed"i said, catching my breath.
