As I enter the school's library I glance down at my phone to see the name of the book I'm looking for again before I start to roam through the aisles.
Walking through many aisles I take notice of how busy the library is today. It's an odd time of the week for the library to be busy but I shrug off the thought and keep looking for the book.
I make a satisfied hum as I reach the correct aisle and walk towards the shelf that has the book I'm looking for. As my hand reaches out to grab it I notice, from the corner of my eye, another hand reaching out for it as well.
We both pause once we notice each other's presence. I turn my head to look at the person as he looks at me with a blank stare before tilting his head. His gaze lingers on me for a few seconds before he speaks. "Hello."
His hand is still in the air reaching for the book as he speaks up. I look around slightly before my eyes glance at the book. "Um, hey. I just need this book so..." I don't finish my sentence as I try to reach my arm out further for the book.
He doesn't move his hand, simply stating while looking at me, "I need it too." I look back towards the shelf and realize that there's only one copy left of the book.
This mysterious guy seems to notice this as well as his gaze doesn't leave mine for even a second as his hands remain motionless but he speaks again. "There's only one copy."
I sigh as I lower my hand down. "That's what it looks like." Noticing my hand lower he grabs the book off the shelf quickly and holds it close to him. There is a small silence as he simply stands there holding the book. Eventually he speaks up after we stare at each other for a few moments. "You need this book for a class as well, I presume?"
I nod. "Yeah, I just need to look at one of the chapters in there to finish an assignment." He gives a small nod back. "I also have an assignment to complete relating to this book. As it is the only one left in the library, I suggest we share it."
I push up my glasses slightly as I consider his idea. I let my eyes roam around the aisle we're in as I begin to think. If we need different chapters then I could just take pictures of the pages I need. Yeah. That would work.
"Sure why not. I'm good with that if you are." I finally replied, making eye contact with him. An ever so small smile forms on his lips. "That is good. It would take less time if we did it that way. I presume we should find a table to sit at. If we do it here we may get in the way of others searching for books."
Without waiting to see my response this time he begins to walk off causing me to have to follow him. He leads us to an empty table and immediately places the book down as he sits. I follow his lead and sit down as well while taking my laptop out of my bag.
As I glance back towards him after pulling up my assignment I notice the weird way he is sitting. He's squatting on the chair causing his knees to touch his chest as his hands rest on his knees.
He turns his head towards me making my face flush with embarrassment from staring too long. "Sitting like this helps me think better." He replies quickly in a monotone voice.
I let out a quick hum of acknowledgment before looking back at my laptop. "So, which chapters do you need for your assignment?" I ask after a few seconds.
"Chapter ten..." He pauses for a second before speaking again. "And seven, do you require both of these as well?" I shake my head. "I need chapter twelve but it's fine. I'll just take a picture of all the pages in chapter twelve and you can use the book so we can both get our work done."
"That is reasonable. I have an interesting question for you." He begins to ask, making me curious what he's going to say. "Do you find staring at a screen for longer periods affects your eyesight when reading in general? I think it personally bothers me, however I am not sure if it is simply in my head."
I pause for a moment not expecting that for his question. "I mean yeah. It affects everyone to some extent. I can look at screens longer than the average person though cause I do it all the time." I shrug.
"I see... I wanted to ask since you wear glasses. It made me curious." He adds as I smile slightly. I lean back in my chair. "I don't think technology caused my bad vision since I needed glasses when I was super young but I definitely think it made my prescription worse throughout the years."
"Mm.. I see... I wonder if there is a way to lessen the damage it does to one's eyesight over time." After his thought is fully spoken, he shifts his position on the chair to be a bit more comfortable. Well, as comfortable as a sitting position like that could get.
I nod in response as I turn the textbook slightly towards me and start snapping pictures of chapter twelve on my phone. I can feel his eyes linger on me as he speaks up once more. "If you don't mind me asking what is your name? I figured if we are going to be sharing the book together we should at least introduce ourselves properly."
"My name's (Y/N)." I don't look up at him, still focusing on the textbook, as I respond. "(Y/N), huh? That is a pretty name." He says before nodding and falling silent for a few seconds. "My name is L."
I finish taking the pictures I need and look up at him. "It's nice to meet you L." I give him a smile. He also smiles, but it quickly disappears from his face again. "It is nice to meet you as well. Are you done taking pictures for your assignment?"
"Yup, I'm all done." I prop my phone up next to the laptop and begin my assignment. "Good, I will get started on mine right away then." L says as he grabs the book and starts reading the chapters he needs for his assignment.
His reading is rather quiet with no sounds except for the occasional turning of a page. I do my best to work quietly as well. It's a bit harder for me as the clicking of the keyboard keys make a slight bit of noise.
I glance towards him and it doesn't seem like the noise is bothering him thankfully. We both continue to work on our assignments and time passes by quickly.
L seems pretty focused on his assignment, he rarely ever glances over to me since he does not want to get distracted. Occasionally, he would let out a small noise while reading though. Making me glance towards him every so often to see an interested look on his face.
He eventually takes a notebook and pen out of his bag and starts to write notes on the chapters. I can't help but get a bit distracted from time to time just watching him.
It doesn't seem like he notices my staring, simply going through his tasks quietly. His hand writing down quick and neat notes in the notebook.
It's rather quiet besides that, the only sounds being him writing and my typing. L's gaze does sometimes leave the notebook and quickly shifts around the room, sometimes towards me, before shifting back to his notebook again.
Strangely enough my mind has already gotten used to the strange position he's sitting in and my eyes just dart around to every feature of his.
He's not bad looking at all now that I think of it. He's actually quite hot. My eyes widen and my face turns red as I process what I just thought. I quickly look back to my laptop to finish my work as I try to divert my attention from him.
