I readjust my backpack as I begin walking through campus texting one of my friends. After I press send I feel myself collide with someone and hear the sound of a notebook falling.
I stare at the notebook for a moment before looking up to meet L's gaze. "Ah, (Y/N). My apologies, I didn't see you." He says calmly, shifting his body position somewhat so he is fully facing me.
Bending down I pick up his notebook quickly. "It's alright. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. It was my fault." I reach out my arm to hand the notebook back to him. He reaches over and takes the notebook back as I hand it to him, his gaze briefly glancing over me as I do so.
A small smile forms on his face as he begins to speak."That's alright." He then quickly puts the notebook into his bag before focusing on me again. "Do you have somewhere to be soon?"
I feel my phone vibrate in my hand but put it in my pocket to ignore it. "Not really, I was just going to try to find something to do until my next class in a few hours."
"Alright. Would you maybe like to do something together? I don't have anything to do either." He says softly while speaking rather quickly. I feel a smile form on my lips. I readjust my backpack again as I nod. "Yeah sure. Any ideas?" He pauses for a second as he briefly looks around his surroundings and thinks.* "I have one."
He begins to move in a certain direction, motioning for me to follow along. I stand still for a few seconds as he begins to walk further before starting to follow him. L glances over to me, noticing that I started to follow him and he then gives a small nod. Every so often he turns around to check that I am still behind him as we continue to walk.
We eventually make it to a small coffee shop right by campus. He pauses for a second at the door and holds it open for me to go in first. "Thank you." I quietly reply as I walk into the coffee shop, I look around inside and sit down at one of the tables near the front window.
Anytime I'm on break or come here on one of my off days I always sit here. I glance at the barista working and see that it's one of the new hires I trained a few weeks ago.
My gaze shifts back to L as I see him sitting in his normal sitting position. "Have you been here before?" I ask as I lean back in my chair. "No, I haven't actually. This will be my first time here. I've heard the pastries are quite good." He pauses for half a second.
"It seems as though you have been here before, however. Is it your favorite place to grab a drink?" He questions, as his eyes roam around the room. I shake my head impressed with his deductive skills. "I'm familiar with the place. That's all you're getting out of me, mister detective." I tease.
A small grin forms on his face, a very subtle one. He glances back at me, almost as if I had caught him off guard. "Oh, you don't want to tell me anything? Well that just makes it all the more fascinating. I will figure it out eventually."
I laugh slightly. "I'll be waiting for when you figure it out." I reply as I pick up a menu. He eyes me for a moment. "I know you don't need to look over the menu. Your tricks won't work on me." He teases.
"Is that so? Well then, what do you think I am going to order?" I question, a soft laugh escaping as the barista walks over to the table, glancing at both of us.
"You will get a vanilla latte." He replies to me immediately without pause, his eyes shift over to the barista who has arrived at our table. He raises an eyebrow, curious if they'd confirm his choice.
The barista writes down my order without hesitation making L smile at the fact he was correct. "There you have it, it seems I was correct about your order, (Y/N). Your tricks didn't work." He says softly, shifting his body slightly as he adjusts in his seat.
"I'll have a coffee please. Black. With some sugar." He says casually, his eyes briefly shift over to me as he looks back at the barista, waiting for him to take down his order. Nodding, he jots down our orders quickly. "Anything else?" I shake my head as L thinks. "Any suggestions for the pastries here?"
"Our strawberry shortcake is great but we only have that in stock on days when one of my coworkers works. She makes them herself." The barista boasts. "Our carrot cake comes in as a close second though."
L makes a face at the idea of eating carrot cake and I can't help but laugh. "Just the coffee will be fine for me." He finally replies after a long moment.
"Are you sure you don't want anything to eat with it? The pastries are quite good here." He asks L again. "Just the coffee will be fine." He repeats, seemingly more adamant about his choice to not have any pastries.
The barista closes his notepad and begins to start working on our order. "I wonder what days the strawberry shortcake is available." He thinks out loud.
I shrug. "Who knows." He eyes me again and I can tell he's trying to piece all his ideas together. He doesn't respond right away, his eyebrows furrow in thought as he looks at me, trying to figure me out.
"You know when the shortcake is available, don't you?" He leans forward, as he tries to get the information out of me. "I may or may not know." He stares at me, eyes narrow for a while. Before he realizes this will not result in him finding out. He leans back in his chair and speaks.
"Well, I will figure out the schedule for it soon enough. Then we can come back and have some of it together." My face heats up slightly at his comment. "Well I hope the shortcake is as good as you're hoping it is then."
He picks up on this, as he always does, but he doesn't seem to mind, giving me a slight smile. "I'm sure it will meet my expectations." A few minutes later the barista comes back with our drinks. As he places them in front of us L eyes the sugar packets. "Do you have any sugar cubes?"
The barista glances at me, not used to anyone asking for sugar cubes, he glances back at L and nods. "We do, one second I'll get those out for you." As he leaves, L takes a quick look at me. "I know it's a bit strange to ask but I prefer sugar cubes over the normal sugar packets and such."
"It's honestly not the most surprising thing about yourself." I tease him as he rolls his eyes playfully back at me. "Oh? And what is the most surprising thing about me then?" He asks, his eyes still on me. I take a few moments to think, making both of us sit in silence. "Your personality." I finally say.
"Interesting. I'll take that as a compliment then." He smiles. The barista comes back with a small bowl filled with sugar cubes and L perks up. After placing the bowl of sugar cubes down on our table, the barista makes his leave from the table.
L takes a quick look at me and sees that I'm waiting to see him put the sugar cubes in the drink so he does exactly that. He grabs about ten sugar cubes and he drops them in his cup. He picks up the spoon and begins stirring it until the cubes entirely melts inside. Finally, he takes a small sip of his drink. "I'm pleased." He speaks quietly with a small smile.
I blink slowly as I process how many sugar cubes he just put in black coffee. "I take my last statement back. This actually might be the most surprising thing about yourself." I pause for a moment. "Why do you need so many sugar cubes in your coffee?"
L grins, seeing that he was able to surprise me is quite nice to see. "I like things to be sweet, that's all. I've always had a sweet tooth. I know it's weird but I enjoy it." He quietly comments, taking a sip of his drink again. Almost as if he was trying to prove to me how good it is to him.
Everything he does is so hot. Weird sometimes, but still always hot. I begin to tap my fingers anxiously as I start to realize I might be getting in way over my head. I can not be falling for a guy I barely know anything about.
