Prologue

"Alix, when is Mommy coming home?" My sister, Tia asks me.

"I don't know." I say sadly to her at the side of her bed. Its almost 8:30, which means my six year old sister needs to go to bed.

"When's Daddy coming back?" Tia asks. Her curiosity taking over.

"I don't know." I say again. How do you tell your six year old sister that they aren't coming back? How do you explain what happened to them after they split up? I'm not sure so I leave it like this. Its better until she's older. "You need to go to sleep." I whisper softly.

"I know." She tells me, rubbing her eyes and before I know it, she falls fast asleep. I sigh and stand up. I go downstairs to watch the television and soon a knock comes at my door. I look at the time. Who could be knocking at 10:30 at night? Don't they know its rude?

I walk to my door and look through the peep hole. Its a man in a suit. I put the safety lock on and open the door as far as the chain will allow it. "Hello?" I ask.

"Hello. Is this the Matea residence?" The man asked.

"Yes." I smiled politely.

"Is Kathy Matea available?"

"No, she doesn't live here anymore." I said sadly.

"And Don Matea?" I pause for a second. Shouldn't he already know this part.

"He's dead." I say looking at my shoes.

"So you're telling me, you have a six year old here, with no adult. Open the door."

"I'm the adult. I've been caring for her for 6 months now." I muttered.

"We're going to have to take her…"

"No!" I interrupted. "No, you can't take her." I said. "I'll call my sister. She's 26, she'll come take care of us. She can be here tonight." I yelled, regretting it. I didn't want her back here either. But they couldn't take Tia.

Less than 24 hours later, Sarah was here, paperwork was filed, and the man in the suit was gone. Tia was still asleep and I had to deal with my sister.

"6 months!" She shouted.

"Tia's asleep." I mumbled at her. My arms were crossed over my chest, hers were on her hips.

"Why didn't you call me?" Sarah asked with hurt in her eyes.

"You wouldn't have cared." I said. "Dad was still here, remember. You left us, Sarah, what was I supposed to do?"

"You should have done what was right for Tia. She shouldn't live like this!"

"I gave her everything she needed. She has clothes, food, a roof over her head, and someone to love her!" I finally shouted. "I'm all she has left." I quieted down remembering my sweet six year old was right up the stairs. Sarah said nothing, and I turned and stalked up to my room. This was going to be fun. I sarcastically remarked in my head.
