Finally, after 2 years of training Mom has finally let me take the hunter exam. I wanted to take it when I turned 5, but she said that'd be too hard as I was then. I forced her to train me, and now here I am! Waiting for the exam to start. I fiddled with my badge I was given. Number 50. So far, the numbers went up to 300, and there was only one other person who looks even remotely as young as I am.

"Hey, yah new around here?"

"What's it to you?" I said to the creepy man who approached me.

"My name's Tonpa."

"I don't really care." The guy rubbed the back of his head.

"You're definitely the youngest person I've seen taking this exam. And I've taken it 35 times." The statement intrigued me.

"35 times? That sure is a lot. So you know about the people who took the exam in previous years?"

"Sure do."

"Can you tell me some stuff about them?"

"Sure! Number 255 is Todo the wrestler. He's strong and smart. Over there is Number 103, Bourbon the snake charmer. He can control snakes and he can really hold a grudge so be careful. And that's number 191, Bodoro, the martial artist. He may be old but he is still really strong. Then there are the three brothers, Amori, Imori, and Umori. They work really well together." The guy stopped explaining and pulled out two cans of soda. "Say, why don't we toast for friendship?"

"No thanks. I know all about you. Tonpa the rookie crusher. I also know that you give really good information, so thanks for that. Good luck this year! Maybe it'll be your lucky year." I say. I was really just acting naive to gain information. Not much else can be gained from him. Before long, the first examiner came in.

"I apologize for the delay. Thank you for waiting. We have come to the end of the exam registration. And so, the Hunter Exam begins now!" Finally! I've been waiting forever to take this exam. Mom trained me, so there is no doubt that I'll be able to pass. "Let me remind you again. If you are not lucky or strong enough, taking the Hunter Exam could lead to serious injuries on your part and it could even cost you your lives. For those who are taking the test in spite of all that, please come with me. For the rest of you, please leave the place by taking the elevator right behind you." Of course no one is going to leave. We've made it this far, of course everyone is going to keep going. "Well then. All 404 candidates have decided to take the first test." The pace started off slow, but slowly progressed to running. "How rude of me. I neglected to introduce myself. My name is Satotz and I am the official examiner for the First Phase. Now, I am taking all of you to the Second Phase venue." If this is the first phase, then this will be so easy. He's testing our mental and physical strength, and I've already trained for something like this. Mom gave me some tips going in, though she couldn't tell me a lot.

After running for a while, my mind starts to run dry of things to think about, so I start scanning the crowd. It looks like only two people, minus the examiner, can use nen, best to steer clear of them. It took me two years to master my nen, which Mom said was extraordinarily rare. Even so, I'm still only 7. Sure I've been training for two years, but number 44 and 301 look like they've been training a lot longer and have achieved nen mastery. They could probably beat me purely with strength. I have an advantage in battle to everyone except those two, but some people seem interesting nonetheless. In particular, number 99. He seems a little older than me. I look over to him. He is talking to number 405. Seeing them talk, I ran over there to introduce myself. We are the youngest people taking the exam, so it seems necessary. "Hiya." I said, once I got them. "How old are you two?"

"We're 12." Number 99 responds. "Why?"

"We look like the youngest people here. It seemed necessary."
