Although it was just the first month of pregnancy, the mornings had already begun their routine of unpredictable nausea. That morning was no different. Rumaisa leaned over the sink, the sounds of her retching echoing in the quiet bathroom.
Ranvijay was instantly by her side, gently holding her hair back, his hand resting supportively on her back. His presence was quiet, steady-just what she needed in that moment.
Once she finished, she rinsed her mouth and leaned weakly against the sink. "I'm okay," she whispered, clearly not okay.
He dampened a soft towel and gently wiped her face, his touch full of care. "No, you aren't," he said, brushing a few stray strands of hair behind her ear.
Helping her back to their room, he made her sit down and brought a glass of water to her lips. "Pani piyo," he said softly.
As she took slow sips, still catching her breath, the bedroom door creaked open and two tiny voices called out in unison.
"Mumma."
"Mimi."She looked up and smiled faintly at Ruhaan and Rehaan standing near the door, blinking quitely.
"Ghum ke aa gaye?" she asked them, her voice soft.
They nodded.
Ranvijay looked at her gently. "Neeche jaogi?"
"Haan," she replied with a tired smile.
Ruhaan waddled up to her, placing his small hand on her knee. "Tya hua, Mimi?"
She leaned down and placed a kiss on his forehead. "Kuch nahi, baccha," she said lovingly. "Mimi is ok"
The boys leaned into her lap while Ranvijay sat beside them, wrapping his arms protectively around all three. Their little cocoon of love had just begun to grow-one small moment at a time.
"Baitho yahan, beta," Kaushalya said gently as soon as Rumaisa entered the living room, her face slightly pale, a faint trace of fatigue in her steps.
She didn't resist and slowly lowered herself onto the plush divan, adjusting her dupatta over her shoulder with a soft sigh. Her hand instinctively rested on her abdomen - barely a change in sight, but everything inside her was already shifting.
"Subah phir se vomiting hui?" Dadi Sa voice was tender but laced with concern as she settled beside her, placing a hand on her back with a motherly touch.
Rumaisa gave a small nod, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Haan... thoda. But I'm okay now. Bas halka sa weakness hai."
Kaushalya didn't wait a moment. She handed her a chilled glass of coconut water, already placed on the tray by the house staff. "Yeh lo, thoda pi lo. Thandak milegi. Doctor ne kaha tha na, subah-subah yeh best hota hai tumhare liye."
Rumaisa took it with a grateful smile, taking a few slow sips. The coolness was a relief.
She glanced up at both the elder women sitting beside her - her in laws treating her as if she were made of glass. But there was no denying the quiet comfort in it.
"Taiyaariyan kaise chal rahi hai?" Dadi Sa asked, shifting the conversation smoothly while her eyes still watched Rumaisa carefully.
"Sab kuch smoothly ho raha hai," she replied, her voice lighter now. "Mujhe toh kuch karne hi nahi diya ja raha. Sab kuch manage ho raha hai mere bina bhi."
