Micah's ability is to see through THE VEIL, an invisible force that separates the human world from the "intangible world". Instead of ghosts, what's on the opposite side of The Veil is more akin to demons; grotesque monsters with forms of fluid shadow and smoke; darkness made malleable. They can haunt, possess, and cause harm to the living if powerful enough. Because Micah can see them, they can touch him, and because they can touch him, they can attack him.
