I don't really remember my mother. She gave birth to me and my brother and sisters at Mill Brook Animal Centre. But then she was very ill. My dad was useless. He couldn't feed the four of us. But he tried his best to keep an eye on us. I remember humans coming in and feeding us with bottles. But mother was so weak that she didn't move from her space.
"Mama?" I barked one day. "Will you be okay?"
Mother nuzzled up to me. "Don't worry, little one! Life will be great for you and your siblings."
I gave her a look. "But you can't move!"
"No, sweetie," Mother licked my nose. "I'm so tired."
Her eyes were closing. Her breathing was shallow. The cage door opened and a human came into the cage with a bowl of water and food. "Here, Niamh, girl!"
Mother looked up and whimpered at them. They petted her gently. Then I got picked up and cuddled.
"Good girl," the human soothed.
I stared at my mother who was lapping up the water but she didn't touch her food. The human put me down in the basket and walked over to her.
"Oh, girl! Please eat!" She put the bowl near Mother's nose. She turned her head away.
"You aren't well, girl!" The human sat beside her and stroked her long coat.
I whimpered. I didn't like where this was going.
"You look so exhausted," the human said, hugging mother.
Mother whimpered in pain.
"Let's go to the vet," the human helped her to her paws. "It's okay. Take it easy, girl!"
Mother managed to find balance and let the Human lead her out.
Little did I know that was the last time I saw her.

What felt like two hours later, I woke up from a nap and looked round. Mother's place in our cage was empty. I stepped out of my basket and sniffed round. There was no sign of Mother. I felt panicked and howled. I felt terrified.
"What's wrong?" My older sister asked, coming over from her cage through the back.
"Mama isn't back," I whined. "She's gone."
Those words felt fresh on my doggy heart. I hoped it wasn't true.
"Are you okay?" My sister nuzzled me. "Everything will be okay."
But I didn't respond. I just lay there, scared.

Dad came trotting in, his tail down in respect. He looked sad. All us pups were cuddling up together.
"Where's Mama?" My brother whimpered.
Dad sat down on his haunches. "Kids. I have sad news."
I didn't want to hear the next words.
"She's not with us anymore," said Dad. "Mama's gone!"
I howled sadly. Mother is dead!
