I couldn't handle mother's death. I only knew her for four weeks. I developed lots of things before my siblings like walking, opening my eyes and even finding my voice at one week old. The people at the shelter were confused about it.
I was looking for the perfect time to plot my escape from here. If I wanted to leave, then I can! I had no mother and my Father was a jerk. My siblings didn't even give a fluff about me. I felt so alone in this world. I knew mother for only a short time. But I could feel her looking over me like a dog guardian angel.
***
My brother came over to me with stumbly legs. He noticed I lay in mother's spot. He nuzzled me, looking upset.
"Miss her?" He asked, with whines.
I nodded. My ears twitched like nothing. "You don't understand, bro!"
"Sure, I do!" My brother exclaimed. "You were close to her. You wouldn't leave her side."
"I don't want to be here anymore." I felt those words go through my head.
"So you want to run away?" My brother looked at me.
I nodded. My ears still twitching.
Dad came up at that point. He looked down at me. He swiped me gently and pulled my brother away. I lay my head between my paws, feeling so down. If only I could get out of here!
***
Soon, my chance came. When the shelter owners came round the cages. I got to my paws, looking so upset. I gave them the sad eyes.
"Oh, little pup!" Said one of them. "Miss your mommy?"
I wagged my tale in a half-hearted way. The woman opened the door and gave me a cuddle. God, that felt good. But how would I escape? I whimpered and put my head on the woman's hand. She lifted me up and walked out the cage with me to do my normal stuff outside. I liked this particular human. She seemed like a great human.
"Go potty," I heard her command.
I did so, looking up with puppy eyes at her. She petted me gently.
"Good Girl," she said. "Break!"
I knew that word and walked off. I did want to leave the shelter, but I didn't want to leave this particular human. I felt like she would take me out of here.
"Where you going, girl?" The human asked as I dashed towards the gate.
I stopped and looked at her. I whimpered. I want to get out of here. Please take me out of here.
"You don't like it here," guessed the human kneeling beside me and beckoning me to her lap.
I crawled into it, feeling safe.
"You are a brave dog," she told me. "Wherever you go, you will be okay! She's with you all the time."
I slightly smiled a bit. But still felt sadness.
"I will set you free," said the human, reading my mind. "I can't keep you, unfortunately."
I whimpered. She gently tickled me behind my ears. "I'm pretty sure you'll find a home soon, girl! You will hhave a name, a comfy bed, water, food, and lots of love."
I guessed she had a point.
"Let's set you off," said the human.
She lifted me up, and carried me to the Vet.
***
The vet checked me over. Then stuck things into me that felt painful. But I had treats.
"Good girl!" The vet soothed. "Wow, Melisa. She looks more like Niamh than Rocky. The only thing of her that looks like him is her back end."
Melisa nodded, petting me.
"She's free to go," said the vet.
"Okay, thank you!" Melisa picked me back up.
"I'll ring around to see if she ends up in safe hands," said the Vet.
Then she dismissed us.
***
Once outside, the lovely Melisa put me on the ground. Then she gently petted me. "Good luck, little one."
Then she turned away and went back into the building. I looked round. I'm finally free! I felt my nose twitched, getting all senses get to me. My ears pricked up, getting all the sounds. Then I found myself running, all four paws thundering on the ground. I wasn't sure on where I was going, but I'm sure that it would be safe and friendly.
