You've never laughed before, but it bursts out of you before you can stop it. You've only ever seen others laugh, mostly the doctors when they're happy, and you realize with a start that that must be it. You're happy. The realization stops your laugh, and you look down, aware that you haven't been given permission to be happy. The angry man looks at you with something akin to horror on his face, and you whip your head to look at the winged one, panic coursing through you. You didn't mean to. You didn't mean to be happy, and you need them to know that, but you can't figure out how to tell them. You don't want to be hurt again, but one glance at the winged man's face stops you. He looks happy, but there's an undertone of sadness as he  nods his head at you, telling you it's okay. Somehow he knows what you need to tell him, and he's assuring you that it's fine.

Seeing your hesitation, he raises his hand to the sky and smiles. Suddenly, the white things move away, revealing a bright yellow orb that radiates warmth. It hurts to look at, but somehow it makes you feel safe. You raise your hand again, flinching as the big man moves closer only to raise his hand next to yours. You all stand like that for what feels like an eternity. You've never been out of the cage this long, except for when the white coats were hurting you. As your body calms down, you notice exhaustion creeping into the corners of your mind, but you haven't been told you can sleep, which means you need to fight it and stay awake as long as you can.

The men talk for a while, and you start to get antsy. You try not to show it, but you squirm a bit and Wings gently puts you down. You're unsteady on your feet as he motions for you to walk around, but you refuse to pass this up. If you're just going to be put back in a cage, then you'll make the best of being free. You walk around, staying near the men at first, but straying farther and farther from them as you get more comfortable. No matter how comfortable you feel walking around, you're prepared for the shock that emits from the collar around your neck that signals it's time to go back, but it never comes. You nearly trip on your right wing, and lift them both up and out of the way, noting that your left is still sore from being broken a week ago. Continuing your investigation, you stumble on something hard, and looking down you clap your hands over your mouth and draw in a breath. It's one the the blue coat doctors, but it no longer looks like her. There's a stab wound in her neck, and her skin is charred black. A pang shoots through your chest, and you recognize it as sadness; you liked her, she didn't hurt you as much as the others and she always smiled at you.

You've been walking for about twenty minutes now, getting slowly farther away from the three men. You don't trust them. Even the one with wings could turn on you in an instant. He had gotten you out of the cage yes, but that didn't mean he couldn't throw you right into another one. after finding a nice soft place in the trees surrounding the debris, you curl into a ball to rest your legs, shaky from too much use after being trapped in such a small place for your whole life, and to think about what you should do. You decide to get the collar off first, and then fly as far as you can, but your exhaustion finally wins.

A/N I've struggled with this chapter for weeks, I just couldn't get it to work. Next chapter will be a time skip, which will be explained throughout the story. Jesse's seven in these earlier chapters, but in the time skips they're about seventeen unless said otherwise. Stay safe kits!- Rum
