Adrenaline pumped hard through my veins, anxiety in pulsated through the air at an overwhelming rate, but somehow I remained calm, cool, and collected. The gun felt cold and strange in my hands as I aimed it at Talon. Betrayal, anger, and sadness hit me hard as I focused on the smug bastard's face. How could he? I guess he wanted to hurt me just as much as I had hurt him, but at what cost. My family? My heart? He was completely and utter focused on his own sinister plans to realize he was playing with fire.
He faced me down on the other side of the room. "Do, it." He crossed his arms, waiting patiently. "Shoot me."
I know what your thinking, How did it come to this?
"Eve, he's gone." Sophia echoed my worst fears. He couldn't be gone. No. I refuse to condone this idea.
"He's not gone." I wiped sweat from my brow as I reached for another book. "He wouldn't leave me."
"It's been a month now-"
"We just need to look harder." I flipped through pages, not looking up when Luca set down a heavy crate beside me.
She stormed over to me, ripping the book from my grasp. "Look at what you're doing." She angrily flipped the cover to me. " How to Find Your Missing Child?"
"Give it back." I was up to my feet in seconds.
"He's a demon, not a child and he's gone." She got mine my face, nose to nose. "Except it, because I can't see you like this." She looked to Luca for help. "He up and left you a month ago, except this.
I fell to my knees in anguish, my breaths becoming shallow."No, I can't-"
Strong arms pulled me close, as Luca consoled me. "He's gone."
"No." The word was inaudible as it left my lips. Denial was the only thing providing hope, and I couldn't mentally handle or fathom the love of my life leaving me. I gasped and cried out in pure agony as I felt my heart break in two. He loved me, so how could he? My lungs burned and my nose ran.
"Honey, I know." Sophia handed me a Kleenex, being the great friend she was. "You take all the time you need, ok?"
My tongue caught in my throat and all I could do was nod.
Talon
"Thaddeus, again!" I yelled in exasperation as I watched our newest soldier try to hit the target. He was a rarity with his lanky body to the other muscular soldiers training in the arena. He was shutting me out, not heeding my orders, and my patience was growing thinner by the second. He was what you'd call a Lesser demon. While Greaters could be seen by the human eye, he was simply dark matter. It was like when you see a shadow move out the corner of your eye, but when you look at it, it's gone. Or to a children's point of view the monster under your bed. Lessers are known to feed from fear and other negative emotions, while we feed purely from souls.
He swung his sword half heartedly and charged at his opponent. He fell to the ground as he was sidestepped. The other looking down at Thaddeus in triumph......again. Raw anger overtook me as I was upon him in seconds, pinning him to the ground, my sword at his throat. He stunk of fear and liquid ran down his legs, my nose scrunched up in disgust. "How about I give you a little motivation." I proposed as I put pressure on the knife, black liquid running from his throat. "If he beats you again, Thaddeus, I will kill you." I nailed him in the face, for good measure, before standing up, leaving- but not before spitting on him.
I sat down on a bench in the resting area, watching him intently.
"That was harsh even for you." Rey, chuckled softly, watching the boy as well.
