Rose

Pain splintered through me as I hit the floor.

There had been gunshots.

Guns.

Had I been hit? I didn't know. Didn't know anything but the splintering light, the blaring echo in my ears. Hitting the floor.

Blake had dropped beside me. I could feel something warm and wet pressed against my hand. I tried to move, to feel. When I lifted my fingers, they were black.

My head reeled. I dropped the hand.

There was screaming. Noise.

From some faraway place, I heard someone's voice. "Ophelia? Ophelia, are you okay?"

I tried to open my eyes, to look at them. I hadn't even realised they'd closed. But when I did, the light was shining. It was too bright. Drowning me.

I let my eyes close again. I felt someone grip my hand. My black, wet hand.

"Ollie, I'm here."

I knew the voice. I tried to say her name, to tell her I was ok. But when I opened my mouth, no sound came out.

"I'm here."

And as I drifted further from reality, I couldn't tell if the sound I was hearing was a ringing in my ears, or if it was gunshots.

Then, I was enveloped by the darkness.
