Aline still hadn't come back, and now Simon had just accepted that she wouldn't. He had not been worth saving.
The visions flowed on as usual. Simon shuttled between visions from the past, the present and the new visions, where he was called by the name 'Nico'.
This time was another one with 'Nico'. But it wasn't from Nico's perspective. No, this time he was that shadow again, the observer.
This was the first time Simon got to see what he looked like when he spent time in this Nico form. But the boy Simon had expected to see was nowhere to be found. Instead, there stood a young man in his late teens. His face was bent down and a single tear fell down his right eye. He sobbed softly.
Beside him stood a girl. Simon knew immediately that it had to be Skyla, the little girl he had seen when the new visions had been just that; new.
People surrounded the siblings where they stood. It was not difficult to see that this was a day of mourning. Someone important must have passed away, someone of value. Someone so completely unlike Simon... No, he couldn't think like that. She would come. He was not abandoned.
Skyla grabbed Nico's hand for a while, squeezed hard.
Nico's tears had subsided. He cleared his throat a few times before starting. "We have gathered here today to say goodbye to a very special person; our Father. Father was a very wise King. He knew how to deal with adversity as he, as you are all probably aware, encountered many during his time in government. But somehow he managed to rule the country and develop it into something absolutely fantastic. Both me and Skyla can never fully fit into his shoes. This is a day of mourning both for us, and for all of Canai and all its inhabitants. But now Father's reign as King has come to an end. We thank him for the time he was on this earth and all he accomplished."
Nico let go of his sister's hand to grab a tree branch that stood adjacent to the burning fire next to the open casket where his Father's body rested silently. He put the branch into the fire and lifted it up slowly.
The crowd followed his every move.
Nico stood next to the casket, waiting a moment before finally setting the white cloth encasing the king's body on fire. The flames danced.
Nico turned to the crowd. "Now the last rest is completed. May your spirit live in eternal peace in the afterlife. May your spirit guide us in the right way. May your spirit find peace."
"May your spirit find peace," was repeated around him, as if in a chorus.
