It's a slow drive up the cabin's potholed driveway. We bump around for a minute or two. The gravel beneath the thin layer of snow grinds beneath the tires.
The cabin at the end of the driveway isn't a cabin as much as a lodge. But a small lodge. The quaint wooden building is nestled beside a frozen lake, white trees surrounding it all. Icicles hang down from every overhang, tree branches, gutters, and misshapen rocks.
I imagine this would be a great place to spend a summer. Swimming in the lake, sitting on the porch, and enjoying the afternoon sun. Tank tops and shorts letting my skin breathe for once.
"Big place," I say aloud, how big is Hank's family?
"It's very pretty," Connor says as I pull us to a stop.Stepping out of the car I place a canvas sneaker into the snow and immediately feel the cold against my foot. It's not too deep, just two inches or so. But it's enough to make me pick up the pace a little, trying to make it to the covered porch before the snow manages to soak my shoes. Letting the cold get inside.
Once I'm at the door I start to fiddle with the lock, it's not a touch screen. So I have to manually unlock it with a key, doesn't matter it opens all the same. The inside is just as cold as the outside, but a lot softer too. A nice comfortable-looking couch and a fireplace that would definitely heat the place up. It looks perfect for a snowy night.
I wander inside, looking for a breaker box or a generator. Something to maybe bring Power back to this place. Connor follows in behind me, closing the door and locking it immediately. The main room we've walked into is open enough to echo if I were to shout.
The kitchen. The dining room. Living room. And entryway. All share one big space. There's an old wooden staircase leading to some open area upstairs. I think it's a loft of sorts. There's a short hallway that separates the wall between the kitchen and living room.
"I'll start a fire," Connor announces,
"Kay, I'm gonna look around a bit."Inching down the hall, my hands holding myself. Fuck it's cold. I find a bathroom, a bedroom, a laundry room, and a staircase down to a dark basement. Knowing damn well that the breaker is down there I look around in a few cabinets. Sure enough, I find a flashlight.
Connors fiddling with kindling as I creep down the stairs. It's just full of boxes, nothing interesting. There is some snow stuff though. Sure enough, the breaker is right at the end of the stairs, I open the panel and it has instructions.
I flip a few switches and suddenly we have power. Water too. No heating though. Fuck my life. By
Connor's sat in front of the fireplace, I don't know how he got it started. Nonetheless, he's staring at the flames, legs crossed. I join him, mirroring his position as I sit beside him.
"What did the duck say when the waiter gave him the check?" I ask,
"I don't know. What?"
"Put it on my bill." Connor pauses for a moment, scoffing a bit once he realizes the pun.
"Do other people think you're funny?"
"No." I sigh, I've never been called funny in my life. Or even slightly humorous.Connor's shoulders relax, he's getting more comfortable. I wish I knew what he was thinking of. He seems down, and he has been for a few days now. Maybe he doesn't like me in the way I thought he did. Maybe we're moving too quickly.
"Connor if something's wrong you can tell me. I'll understand." He looks at me, pausing.
"I'm never going to be able to go back am I?"
"I don't know. Maybe one day, once things have cooled off."I lean over, resting my head on his shoulder. He wraps an arm around me.
"Could we continue what we were doing at the motel?" Connor asks abruptly. I'm gonna have to get used to his lack of subtlety, because if he wants something he clearly isn't afraid to ask for it.
"What? Sure... I mean yeah. Wanna go upstairs first though?" Connor nods, and we wander up to the loft.
