Father Patrick Murphy was staring at Gabriel from the door of Saint Mary's church. He had a letter in one hand and an umbrella in the other.
Father Murphy, closed his eyes and prayed. "God please find it in your heart to Grant Gabriel, piece of mind, and help him to let go of his hate and anger, which has been eating away at him like a cancer for years."
Father Patrick's mind glided back to the first service he assisted on in St Mary's church. Everything was so vivid. The sound of his shoes tapping against the chipped stone floor. The scent of incense, mixed with flowers and the old church aroma. The sound of the organ, and the choir, and the feeling of the creaky wooden pew he sat on. Gabriel's dad father Shaun Boateng was conducting the service and Gabriel was an altar boy. Father Murphy remembered that back then Gabriel had been so involved with every thing to do with the church, from bible studies to choir practice. After the service father Patrick had joked about it with Gabriel, saying he would be a bishop in no time and Gabriel had informed him that he planned to join the priesthood when he was old enough. Father Murphy remembered that father Boateng was extremely attentive to his flock, always putting them before himself, his beautiful Wife Rita and his son.
The scene faded and he was transported too numerous occasions when Rita Boateng was terminally sick in the hospital. The white walls and bleached surfaces, were unable to mask the desperation and sadness which polluted the air. Gabriel was constantly by her side, whereas father Shaun Boateng was nowhere to be found. Rita Boateng constantly called out for her husband, whilst she was on her sick bed, but each time, she did this Shaun was somewhere else tending to his flock. The scene faded to another scene in the hospital. Father Shaun Boateng was visiting one of his congregation who was in the hospital when Gabriel walked pass the room with father Murphy. Gabriel, stopped for a second, to look at his father and then frowned and stormed of.
Gabriel's bawling in the present pulled father Murphy out of his memory.
