"A-Yao!" you called brightly as you rounded the corner to his brothel and saw him at the entrance, his figure contrasting against the bright mid-day sunlight. It was yet another day in Yunping, but today was special, as it was one of the few days you managed to get off from your servant related duties at the brothel.
The New Year's Eve. It was usually a busy time of the year for families and yet for brothels it was but another passing of the year. Furthermore, with the celebration's values around family, it was interestingly enough the time it was most dead in the local brothels.
However, it wasn't the fact that it was a day off for you that made it special, rather it was because you would always celebrate with Meng Yao.
"A-(Y/N)" he greeted as usual, his smile beaming as he caught sight of you.
"Let's go! This year I heard that there is going to be fireworks near the lakes."
You didn't wait to hear his response before you quickly grabbed the sleeve of his robes and pulled him along with you in the direction of the supposed fireworks.
"Wait, I haven't heard anything about it."
"Old man Huá told me about it! He said that it was going to be a surprise for the townspeople, but I want us to get there early so that we can get good spots!"
Meng Yao, rather amused by your antics let out a light-hearted laugh, his mouth quirking into a knowing smile.
"I see. But I thought you promised me that I could pick where we go this year?"
Suddenly you skidded to an abrupt stop, causing Meng Yao to crash into you. With his impeccable balance however he immediately steadied both himself and you from falling face first into the ground.
"Ah...sorry I didn't mean to..." you trailed awkwardly as you released his hand from yours and began to fiddle with them, adverting your gaze "I just really wanted to see the fireworks with you and I forgot..."
However, Meng Yao seemed to take no offence as he let out another cheerful burst of laughter.
"It's fine, A-(Y/N), I would love to see the fireworks with you as well" he replied.
Instantly you brightened up as you turned to face him; eyes locking with his, "Then-"
"But I still think it's too early" he interrupted before you could get another word in, causing you to deflate instantly.
Seeing your emotions so plainly, Meng Yao simply smiled in understanding, "I am fine with going wherever you want, but first I need to take care of some business, okay?" he spoke softly, his eyes glistening.
You simply nodded in understanding, as you awkwardly adverted your gaze again. You had no idea why but lately you could barely look Meng Yao in the eyes directly anymore, especially when he was smiling.
Every-time you did, it felt like you were looking at the sun, which was dangerous to stare at directly for long periods of time. That wasn't even mentioning the way your heart would suddenly speed up faster for some reason.
It didn't take long for Meng Yao to startle out of your own thoughts as he quickly grabbed your hand and led you back in the opposite direction of the fireworks.
"At the moment, mother has been feeling a little unwell, so I was hoping to go to the doctors to get her some medicine."
Suddenly you felt extremely guilty for even trying to drag him away, "A-Yao I am so sorry-"
