You did not understand why Wei Wuxian had suddenly called out, and from your observation Jin Rulan and Sect Leader Nie seemed to be in a similar position.

But Sect Leader Lan was already looking at Meng Yao as he asked, "Sect Leader Jin, was this also part of the plan for the Qiongqi Path Ambush?

"Why would you think that?" Meng Yao answered with a question.

"Do you even need to ask?" Sect Leader Jiang said coldly. "If Jin Zixun hadn't been hit by that curse, nothing that transpired after would have happened! That one incident helped you dispose of both Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun, who were juniors of the same generation as you. It removed every obstacle in your path to succeeding the leader of the Jin Clan of Lanling and taking up the position of Cultivation Chief. Su She cast the curse, and he's your trusted aide. Is there even a question of whose orders he acted on?!"

Meng Yao didn't comment, appearing to be concentrating on regulating his breathing. However, the conversation continued and as it did it brought up a certain memory that had been buried in your mind for some time.

The memory of when you had conveniently bumped into Meng Yao in SiHuang, and how after he had broken down into your arms. Your recollection of that night remained hazy, but you could never forget the sight of him shedding tears, and appearing remorseful for the choices he made that day.

Was it referring to this event?

You had always been confused as to what happened then, and it did not help that only a day after the death of Jin Zixuan was announced to the public. Even though you had ample opportunities throughout the years you never brought up the event again, not wanting to bring up bad memories for Meng Yao.

As the conversation continued, it was revealed that Su She had placed the curse, causing the catastrophe at Qiongqi Path. This of course made you even more confused, especially when Su She vehemently disagreed that Meng Yao had ordered him to do it.

Then Meng Yao did not do it? But it was true that he seemed regretful about that whole event...

Could it really be that he had nothing to do it with?

But then why did he seem so heart-broken and guilty?

Tears streaming. Choking on his emotions. Anguished.

You glanced at Meng Yao, and opened your mouth, ready to voice this irregularity aloud when someone cut in before you could.

"Son of a whore!" Sect Leader Jiang cursed. "You have no shame whatsoever. All in the name of rising to the top! Weren't you the one who put Su She up to it?! Who are you trying to fool?!"

You flinched at the indirect insult to your character and yet sighed, taking a deep breath, you were used to people desecrating your character at this point (even though it did hurt. People acted as if you did it by choice) Even so you could not help but glance at Meng Yao concerningly, whose smile stilled as soon as he heard the words.

"A-Yao don't-" you tried to start but your small whisper did little to catch his attention as he suddenly ripped into Sect Leader Jiang's character.

(Was it horrible of you to feel slightly gratified?)

"Looks like 'son of a whore' really is Sect Leader Jin's sore spot," Wei Wuxian said. "No wonder you killed Chifeng-zun."

(Another death on his hands? Again? How many at this point?)

Meng Yao's smile also froze for a moment. However, before you could speak some words of comfort he abruptly stood up. Having regulated his circulation, he tried flexing the fingers of his left hand, which could now move freely.
