“Kim and I are getting married.”
Porsche spat out the water he had in his mouth.
“You what?” he tried to say between coughs.
“Getting married.”
“But you guys just met!” Porsche was shocked, he would have never imagined that was the reason Porchay sat him down for, he thought he just wanted to discuss about his job applications! “You can’t mate already, it’s too soon and you guys are too young!” Porsche was already stressing at the idea of his baby brother leaving his home. How rarely will they see each other once Porchay had a family of his own?
“First of all, it’s been over a year, and second, you know I’m against mating, we’re just getting married.” Porsche remembered their numerous conversations about mating. With the rarity of true mates nowadays, the new generations wanted to escape the old traditions. Porchay had always been adamant on the subject, claiming mating was the doom of one’s soul, as it was irreversible. Porsche, on the other hand, didn’t really have an opinion on the matter. He figured he’d wait till he found someone to decide.
“Still, you’re too young!”
“I’m 22.”
“Exactly! You’re just a kid!”
“I told you to stop treating me like a child!” Porchay raised his voice. Now they were both shouting.
“I know, I’m sorry, but… you know nothing about their family! What if they force you to mate?”
“They won’t! And if you didn’t have a problem with them, you’d know that too!”
“I don’t have a problem with them!”
“Oh really?! You barely talk to Kim when I bring him home, and let’s not even talk about his brothers!”
“What about his brothers?!"
“Phi! You insulted Kim’s brother in front of everybody! You arrived late at their father’s birthday party, in fact, you didn’t even greet him since you left! And then, you almost fight with P’Kinn on my birthday?!”
“Look, I’m sorry, ok! But that doesn’t change the fact that you just graduated, and that you should be looking for a job to start a career instead of getting married!”
“But that’s not what I want, that’s what you want!” Porchay had almost screamed. Porsche had never seen his brother so upset. “This is my life! And I don’t want to work! I want to stay by Kim’s side! Make music with him! Travel with him! Start a family with him!”
Porsche was speechless.
“I wish… I wish you used that money for yourself…” he heard his brother say with a tiny voice.
And that.
That was the most hurtful thing anyone had said to him.
“I think I should stay at Kim’s for a while” Porchay added after a few minutes of silence.
Porsche remained on his seat, stunned, a lump in his throat, as his baby brother got up and left the kitchen.

He didn’t hear from him for 4 days.
Kim was the first one to reach out. He wanted to invite Porsche to a new Italian Restaurant Porchay was apparently excited to try.
Porsche refused. He had a shift that night.

Porchay came home the following Sunday, on Porsche’s day off. He looked like a lamb about to get sacrificed.
